Its one practical Lesson learned from walking with Jack through the woods.  Nature speaks when you are taught to listen!

To prevent that in the future, I understand that fake nests are sold (I think for bees, but could be for wasps).  As they are territorial, if they see a nest, they won't build one in close proximity.
Is this true?

Can I just leave this nest where it is?

I don't know about the fake nests but if you leave that one there they will bee back next year. Bring it inside this fall and hang er on the wall somewhere.

Sweet!!!!!
They aren't really bothering us. We'll be here til Monday, maybe back once before Thanksgiving.  No reason to blast a bunch of chemical.

So the yellow jackets die off, but the next gen will come back to the same nest?

How do I get the nest off in winter without trashing it?

They will not use same nest.

Climb up there over thanksgiving with a sharp knife and carefully cut where it is attached. Be sure to hold bottom so it doesnt rip away.

One for sale and how to make one yourself.....sounds like a good project to do with your kid.

I can't speak to the effectiveness of them, I've only heard of this.  I half thought that the Amazon one would have a suggestion that "other people also bought an Epipen."

So I am told the nest is vacant this year and quite beautiful.  So glad I didn't kill all those bees!

Now that you have some extra space maybe you can rent it out and make some coin.

Same kind of nest this year, but way back in our woods right above the red trail:

This is right overhead on the red trail and it's built around a very thin branch.  As it gets bigger the weight brings it down closer to the trail.

Those guys have never really bothered me until my last ride when I forgot about it (you have to look up!). I was standing on the pedals, I guess my head got too close and one of them got me. Scared the crap out of me!

Ive apparently become extremely allergic to wasps and just about everything else out there. This pic was taken just minutes after being stung once in the hand. My face started to tingle and numb a few minutes later as well. I’m carrying an epi pen with me now.

I had a similar reaction this season. I am carrying Benadryl, I consider this a mild reaction, wasps have been very bad this year
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Mild? Man, I thought I was one small step from anaphylactic shock. The oral and facial numbing sensation paired with heavy anxiety kind of scared me. It was a wake up call for sure. I don’t want to be solo out in the woods and not be prepared anymore
