I finally got around to putting the clips together for this trip.
Leaving from the Lake George Village Recreation Area's XC trails, there are tote roads that approach the summit of Prospect Mountain from the south bringing you to the lower parking lot south of the summit. The "official" hiking trail starts from the Village proper and makes a shorter, steeper ascent on the east side of the mountain. The southern approach, although longer and less vertical climb, is much more scenic, and in winter can be skied the entire way except for a short steep ravine section two thirds the way up. This section can be skied downhill with a good base, but it follows a rocky streambed and there was no base the day I was there. I really like this outing because I can do it in three hours round trip from my house in Saratoga, including driving.
I used the same cheapee Sony Webbie hand-held flipcam as the last report from me. Sorry for the unstable images. I just ordered a V.I.O. POV HD camera, which should improve some of the quality of my reports despite the distortion.
The route is just over 2 1/2 miles and climbs 1,400 ft.

Nice! I've been interested in skiing those trails but still haven't made it up. Do they groom the LG Rec Center trails? My understanding is that they are groomed. Looks like a fun ski going all the way up to the summit.

Yes, they're kind of groomed. I was there this past Tuesday afternoon after the big rain and it was groomed pretty well. It's not completely reliable and you have mostly snowshoe and occasional boot traffic. It's much more scenic and interesting than the Wilton Preserve XC trails nearby us. And definitely more challenging terrain. |

I thought it was a interesting video. The mighty Quin certainly added to the " tail ".
All those snowmobile trails make me wanna get a sled. If only the snow was more reliable and my garage much larger. |
