Re: Whiteface Conditions

Be interesting to hear reports from boots on the ground.  Hope the sliding surfaces are ok.  Mountain reporting 6 inches.

Now, I did think of starting an “Apology Thread” for you know......but I figured that might be a little cruel!  But, if conditions reports ring true it begs a revisiting of some people’s strong opinions on certain topics related to snowmaking and lifts, and maybe a new view on how mountains approach their long term terrain and snowmaking management.

Whiteface reporting 7 of 11 lifts and 60% of terrain, whereas Gore is reporting 5 of 13 lifts and 12 trails. I don’t even want to know what % of terrain that is.  Yes, Gore is probably being conservative in opening terrain.....because their average reported base is like 10 inches right now.  Whiteface reporting an average base of 37.

These observations aren’t about criticizing either mountain, or saying who is better.  Whiteface and Gore just simply have different approaches, both valid.  Where Whiteface is slower in expanding terrain and lifts, due to building more base on the trails they get open.....Gore expands terrain and lifts more quickly, at the expense of blowing as deep a base on their trails.

Just one question for our resident angry young man.....where would you rather ski today?  I’m sure someone will say Jay/Stowe, but they have open terrain % similar to Whiteface today.

I’m ok with Whiteface’s long term, season long approach to terrain management.  Hopefully an event like this, and what’s available in the aftermath, would at least prompt Sno to expand his hardline thinking.....and MAYBE someone could say it’s a damn good thing they hadn’t blown Wilmington yet!

Re: Whiteface Conditions

I actually bumped into snoloco on the summit chair this morning and we froze our asses off! Windy! Good on them for running it tho.

Today does not suck, and I’m happy I’m not a VT skier as they got skunked.

Whiteface was a pathetic shit show today.  Three lifts weren't open that should have been.  Mountain Run and Freeway could have easily been open, and Lookout could have been had they planned their snowmaking properly.  This caused lines out of the ropes on the gondola, facelift, and LWF.  I only took the summit quad once and it was running very slow and the conditions up there sucked so I didn't take it again.  The snow was great on Little Whiteface, but you were limited to the terrain above mid unless you wanted to burn half an hour in the gondola line.  If they ran Freeway you could have skied Draper's and Lower Thruway and that would have by itself made the day much better.  What could have been a great day was soured by their failure to open all the lifts, and I will not go back until they prove that they are capable of opening them.  Killington tomorrow most likely.  Thank you Max Pass!!
