Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates MTG July 11 in Saranac Lake

Danzilla
Got this email yesterday and figured I would share for anyone in the area who would like to attend.

Please mark your calendar for this major milestone on the way to creating the Adirondack Rail Trail:  5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the Harrietstown Town Hall, Saranac Lake.

A strong showing of support from you and other trail advocates is of critical importance.

A detailed plan prepared by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy will be released and discussed for Phase One of the Adirondack Rail Trail—the 34-mile section of rail corridor connecting Lake Placid, Ray Brook, Saranac Lake, Lake Clear and Tupper Lake. This will be a world-class recreation resource for cyclists, joggers, snowmobilers in season, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.

Phase One is the first segment of a 90-mile trail on the old rail bed between Lake Placid and Old Forge, through the heart of the Adirondacks.

Carl Knoch, Trail-development Director for the Northeast office of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), has done a mile-by-mile, on-the-ground analysis of the 34-mile segment of rail corridor connecting Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  He will present the findings of RTC’s trail-development plan detailing the costs and benefits of converting the rail corridor into a recreation trail. Based on similar rail-to-trail conversions elsewhere, the Adirondack Rail Trail will spur local economies and greatly enhance the quality of life in the Tri-Lakes Area.

The Adirondack Rail Trail is an idea whose time is now long-overdue. Although this largest park in the lower 48 states offers thousands of miles of hiking and paddling trails, nowhere in the Adirondack Park is there an easy, level, compactly-surfaced, long-distance trail that links our communities, traverses wild and beautiful landscapes, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and physical abilities. Users will include bikers, runners, walkers, parents pushing baby-strollers, wheelchair users, wildlife watchers and nature lovers of all persuasions. For visitors and residents alike, the Adirondack Rail Trail will  provide a safe, serene recreational haven, far removed from the danger and hassle of road traffic.

PLEASE  JOIN US ON JULY 11 AND HELP MAKE THIS TRAIL A REALITY!
