Got a call from Chris this morning that he and Jess were free to do some skiing. They were staying over in BCC and I was in LCC. Rather than buying a day pass, they got a $15 one-up from Brighton and met me near the top after I skied over from Alta. Before leaving, Chris notified me that Jess had left her skins in NY. Rather than letting that stop our day, I sourced some up from another employee who was working all day (thanks, Liz!).
I sent Chris and Jess up the Crest Lift to the Pioneer Ridge boot pack, told them to ski that line and we would meet a the bottom. A few phone calls, photos, and videos later, we figured out where we both had to go to meet up. Chris and Jess started just lookers left of the small saddle, had to pick their way through some bony stuff before hitting the chalky N facing slope. We made the skin hand off at the bottom of this pitch and headed back up the ridge to find some more N facing, sun protected goodness. It hasn't snowed much at all (by Utah standards) this month, so even to find some soft snow was a blessing. "Its might not be deep powder, but it's definitely powder." We attained until we were creeping our way up an absurdly steep skin track and called it good from there. We transitioned and made out way out to a tasty-looking slope. Chris got some. As did Jess. I was hoping to get them up to Tuscarora Peak and ski the Seagull chute (the prominent one just lookers right of the peak) but it was my first time actually skiing between Brighton and Alta, and it was a considerably longer than I expected. We got down to Lake Mary and checked the map to make sure there were no more ascents. I grabbed the skins from Jess and we parted ways. Jess and Chris headed back down to Brighton and I slogged back over to the top of Tuscarora and on to Mt Wolverine. I hung out a bit and took in the views from what might be my favorite place in Alta and descended the Southwest shoulder of Mt Wolverine (as far as I know, its unnamed, so I've been calling it the "South Paw") down some creamy corn and into work. Considering that those two were in a mountain range they had never visited before, with no skins, I'd say it logistically worked out as well as it could have! It was great to see some familiar smiling faces in new places. Chris and Jess are on their way up to Jackson for the rest of the week. A few storms have tracked North of Salt Lake and been giving the goods to the Tetons, so maybe I'll have to head up there later this week. Until Next time... |
Great report and pictures,thanks.

Wow. Simply beautiful.

Sweet! The seagull really looks like a seagull. What a cool little zone. I have skied Wolverine before and quite a bit out at Rocky Point during the winter of 98 when I lived there.

Agreed. But, it just goes to show you how bad our season is back here...correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Utah is having "just" an average season for them. |
I went to Utah twice last year in what was considered a terrible season by them. We would kill for what they had last yr right now

Yeah TBATT! Thanks for the tour! Jess just picked up some new skins from Wilson Backcountry... All settled into the condo now.
Rode at Jackson today. Got into some trouble, after a very long traverse we made our way back... That's another story. Anyway here are some pics from our excision with Ted... We'll see you in a couple days Jess getting ready after target was acquired.. Good ol fashioned "wait... Waive your hands on the air" did the job for locating each other. The exchange of goods broing out Sorry for getting a bit sideways. Forum seems to post as they were taken. So if I take wide angle they go sideways. Get it?
The day begins... Your mountain awaits.
