I understand operating costs and all that stuff but they're in the skiing business
You see, that's your problem. "They" are not in the skiing "business". They are managers and employees of a state funded recreation facility, which at times is presented to the citizens of NY as a profit making business, to make matters easier for those taxpayer funds to keep flowing in for the next budget year. As long as you look at it that way, you'll be a little happier. A little.
I told this story once before, but, I'll repeat. Once I was there on a Tuesday after it dumped over a foot the day and night before. Both the North Quad and High Peaks chair weren't running. "Why", I whined to a patrolman. "Because it's Tuesday", was his response. "but, but....." I blubbered. "Because it's Tuesday", he said again, sternly. Oh, I said to myself. I get it.
