So, in answer to the original thread title " Does Omni-Heat work " I gather the answer is a resounding yes.
Would be great for those who are terminally cold or ski sub zero. Does this coat breathe well, would be a question to answer. |
Yes, this is one of the best jackets around for someone that is terminally cold. No, the jacket doesn't breathe and is stifling hot if you give off a lot of body heat. Even with both pit zips open all day, I still got hot most days. And I only closed them on the bitterest of the most windy days.

Looks like I have to give Columbia another chance. A replacement showed up yesterday. Some of the haters on the "tree-skier green" may like the dark moss better:

It does look really good.
Problem is the materials and workmanship didn't live up to the insulating technology. The is the second failure I've had (after the velco issue) it's time to move on: This is after 3 days of resort skiing and maybe 10 days of casual wear. I didn't bring a backup coat (doh!) but it was BRAND NEW. So I have to nurse that stupid thing this week. I hit that zipper everytime I go for the camera, but still come on. It's got to deal with YEARS of that to be legit. Thumbs down. Can't have my gear let me down.

I'd like to revise this to clear something up. The omni heat liner - is what Columbia REALLY wanted me to review. It really performs in the cold. This is not news to me, I'm just reminded of it on a brutally cold day like today. I still can't (won't!) rely on a coat that comes unstitched in a few days. But that liner does really perform, and the fact that it is tailored to the coat means you have good range of motion.

Hello,
I'd like to know if Omni-Heat jacket is good for skiing in low temperatures, like -15 C or -20 C (the temperature is in Celsius). It's very cold on chairlift, especially at the windy day. At the retail stores, I've been told that I need to put layers under Omni-heat jacket, but I want to have jacket and not to wear layers. Is it possible to try Omni-heat jacket? Thanks |

The problem for many seems to have been that it was too warm for some. It's a warm liner. Just be aware that mine had durability issues. If warmth is the main concern you can get a good price on it from backcountry.com.

The Omniheat hats are crazy warm too. The gf and I got some free ones in Lake Placid from Columbia reps at an FIS aerials event, and even though the temps were in the negatives they kept us really warm.
Can we get SOME snow? Please?
