Not sure white frightens me more. The stupid, inconsistent shit I've said that's probably somewhere in the evidential record that can make me look like a fool.......or the fact that there are fucking elephants out there who will know when and where to find it when the time comes to roast me! I can't remember what I jacked off to yesterday......oh, wait, that was the liberal talking heads getting their comeuppance....much less what a dozen of you fuckers said a month ago! Bravo, Brownski!

Agreed. It's human nature. I can def see that without something like EC, more populous but smaller regions would capitalize on the less populous but larger ones. That's also human nature. We could have 6 or 7 states that reign over the whole country. IMO, not good. Given the stark divide in ideology today, a balancing mechanism is a good thing. Once tipped towards populous regions, it would be extremely hard to rebalance. |

Brownski - I don't think my post is invalid. First of all - I was asking a question and I don't think it has been answered. What is the point of not giving people control of an election?
If Trump is a danger to the republic, the representatives who make up the electoral college are supposed to / have the right to say "fuck this shit" and not vote for him. If they fail to do that because they're scared of their cushy political careers, then the electoral college system is indeed broken. Maybe you have taken more history classes than me and can explain it better, because I am more well read on the Civil War to present than the founding fathers. The people have spoken and I fail to see how we're left with a government that represents the people. Urban people overwhelmingly voted for Clinton. Rural people overwhelmingly voted for Trump. Half the people said "you guys can do this without me". We're talking about fewer than a quarter of the people who could vote turning up and saying "Trump's my guy". Is this sour grapes about the electoral college? Sure. My mistake for misremembering how awful this was in 2000. I have a positive outlook in general, and tend to let go of horrible stuff. But I remember now, and that wasn't fun. Like many liberals and even a few of the conservatives here, Sanders was my guy. Instead I'm getting my fifth or sixth choice, and it tastes like shit. I still fail to see the justification for how the electoral college is supposed to balance power between different people. The point is to take power out of people's hands to prevent disasters. Here we have one. Will they do anything? As far as the balance of power it's also supposed to grant: It's kind of like Citizen's United, rich people are afforded more of a voice because they can channel unlimited funds into politics except here we have to say that through some weird mathyness, rural states are afforded a greater voice in the voting than people in cities or something. Dude is going to lose by a million votes. He got fewer votes than Romney in 2012. What kind of mandate is that? A bullshit mandate? He gets to put a climate denier as the head of the EPA? It's fucked. |
Look, the tone he is setting right now is fine. He had a great campaign. But there's his long history of childish outbursts, nastiness, vindictiveness, bankruptcies and other issues that remain deeply troubling to me as an american, not as a liberal. And if he fails to address the fact that he has emboldened anti-semites, misogynists, xenophobes, etc, and shut it down now, then how is really supposed to be president for all americans?

Well.....the Dow Jones Industrial Average responded favorably so I guess we can just forget about all that racism, misogyny, xenophobia and anti-intellectualism, right? You know....as long as my retirement isn't affected, who cares about the culture? |

I get that for you and a lot of other people the results don't really matter. |

I understand where you're coming from, ML. I'm just saying the electoral college is there for a reason. Feel better, man. It's all gonna be ok.

Huh, it seems like it is there to prevent an actual democracy in case someone is elected without the requisite qualifications....
That is specifically what I was saying with the EPA. The job is to protect the environment, not dismantle it. |
Further evidence of the electoral college being fucked:
So why are the country voters the disenfranchised? |
I think this article does a nice job in explaining what happened, why people went with Trump and not Hillary.
Sure she won the popular vote ML but by 6 million votes less than Obama did. It seems as though what Hillary didn't count on was the number of people that voted for Obama went with Trump. According to this article it was both rural and suburb folks. Don't blame it all on us country bumpkins, you dig?? http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/insight-how-hillary-clintons-white-voters-melted-away/ar-AAk9sHB?li=BBnb7Kz |

I see your point but do not think that what we have represents the best way to do things. The office is supposed to be for everyone. I.E. No one should be out burning flags on the outcome. A solution which could mean more empathy and understanding for important issues on both sides would be better. |
