Gore Jan 23-24 2016

Spent the weekend at Gore.  My son was doing a speed camp with a Super G race today that my wife is at.

Saturday was cold and really crowded and got skied out very fast.  I was showing some WF race dads around.  Lies was just nasty but Rumor was decent.  Lots of pebbles in the snow just about every where and the cover is noticeably thinner than at WF.

Sunday was much better.  A few Gore race dads I know took me around and we hit things at the right time and in the right order.  Topridge was the run of the day with cold smoke gun pow whales. We hit it first thing and did about 7 or 8 laps during the course of the day.  Hawkeye and Chatimac were also quite good.  The groomer under the Gondi was also nice.  The crowds also seemed less but after lunch it still gets really icy quick.  My theory is that Gore blows and grooms without the letting it sit to drain more than WF does at least on the lower MT leading to the it getting icy quicker.  I'm getting to know the dads on the race circuit which is nice to have someone to ski with and hang out with waiting which is what ski race parents have to do a lot of.

Uncas was a total $hit show.  That really needed to be groomed as it was the only way to the summit lift and it was boney icy bumps with people flailing all over it.

Stayed at the Black Mt Lodge - rooms are just ok but the price was right.  The heating was having issues keeping the room even luke warm – it never got above 60.  The pub had good food and beer.

Hopefully my son comes back with a good result. He was having a blast doing speed for the first time.

I've noticed this with other mountains as well.  Hunter tends to let the snow drain before grooming.  Windham and Mountain Creek tend to blow and groom without letting it drain and the trails are always very icy with death cookies when they first open for the year.
I've lived in New York my entire life.
