Gore Mtn 3/31/11

Snowhunter
After much anticipation and after debating between Gore and Whiteface I chose to head over to Gore Mtn today for my 25th ski day of the year.  I was concerned about the possibility of rain and I thought the temps might get a little too warm this afternoon.  I was wrong on both counts!  There were flurries throughout the morning that turned to a steadier snow in the early afternoon.  As to warm...not even close, I found myself feeling cold a few times throughout the day, never feeling any urge to peel off any layers.

I boarded the gondola the first time around 9 with plans of heading straight over to the Straight Brook Quad to run as many blacks as I could while my legs were strong.  Wrong again!  Ski Patrol had not yet dropped the ropes on Bear Mtn.  After two runs down the lower mountain I finally found access to the Topridge Triple and Straight Brook Quad open.  My first run from the top was a pleasant ride down Chatiemac.  Next up was Hawkeye which had a slightly harder surface with more ice patches.  Upper Steilhang was similar and Open Pit fell somewhere between Chatiemac and Hawkeye surface wise.  Topridge never opened while I was there (it looked kinda nasty from the triple) but Uncas wasn't bad.

I did my typical bouncing around from trail to trail, giving each one at least a couple of runs and mixed in a couple of trips down to the base just for variety. The trails that were groomed were a mix of HARD snow and some packed powder with limited ice patches.  My skis were chattering up a storm on the trails that didn't seem to have been groomed.  I didn't find the soft stuff I was dreading except at the very lowest part of the mountain and I was able to adjust to it pretty quickly.

I called it a day at around 1:30 having gotten in plenty of solid runs and with thoughts in my head of leaving something in the tank for Friday or Saturday with the incoming storm.  All in all it was a good day but nothing like last Thursday when I was there.  Now to start debating when and where to spend Day 26!!

Powderqueen
why would you dread soft snow?

This does not compute.

I was referring to the mush (mashed potatoes?) that I've struggled with on some really warm days.  Perhaps my description leaves something to be desired and/or I just need to work on my skiing ability some more!  :-)
