I woke up in North Creek and was greeted with a temperature of -6. There were clear skies and no wind. I could see and hear from my lodging the snowmaking still going on Sagamore. That always makes me happy.
Morning Gondola Snowmaking on the base area Again I headed to the upper mountain and was treated to some wonderful cord. It was incredibly silent except for the occasional roar of what sounded like a truck engine downshifting going down a hill. I finally figured out that it was coming from snowboards on the fresh cord. Crazy. Sadly the upper mountain was scraped by mid-morning. The North Side was finally opened with the choice of Sleeping Bear and Pete Gay. Sleeping Bear was excellent with powder and packed powder conditions. High Peaks from Sleeping Bear Showcase was fast and fun but there were some icy spots to keep you on your toes. The best run on the main face was Lower Sleighride to Stokes as the guns were on most of the day. Twister was again closed for the speed camp so I did the hike over to Sagamore and was rewarded for my efforts. There were guns going on the lower 2/3 of Sagamore and conditions were excellent. There were snowmaking whales up and down the trail and the last section was also getting bumped up. Lower Sagamore Whales and Bumps Lower Sagamore closer view More Snowmaking on Sagamore I took a few laps on Echo. That trail is so wide that I tend to let the skis run. There were some scratchy parts, but who could tell when you are make big GS turns. Rock wall skiers right Upper Echo View from Echo There are various locations on Gore were you can see Hickory in Warrensburg. I think the view from Echo is the best. Hickory from Echo I had a great weekend skiing Gore. Despite only having 60%-70% of the terrain open and no glades it never felt crowded. There was the usual mid-morning line at the Gondola, but every other lift was ski right on all day. Conditons were scratchy to excellent and there were no rocks on any open trails. Once again Gore delivers a fun weekend of skiing. |
Another very thorough trip report. We had a blast on Sagamore and skied it most of the day, though we did sample the other side of the mountain and took a run on Lies, just to see if there was any improvement. It was MUCH better than it was on Friday or Saturday. The grooming was excellent and a little sunshine helped make it a little more carveable.
I love the pix. I did not take many pix this weekend, as I was quite busy with my posse. Here are the few Rochester Mark, Penny, Charlie, Eric Pam on Sagamore It was pretty chilly this weekend. I think too many people wished for warmer weather. Be careful what you wish for! |
