I've only been to Montreal a couple of times (both in the past 6 month now that our parent co. is up there), and both times involved getting from downtown to the airport between 4pm and 6pm. I work in Manhatten. Montreal had traffic, but it didn't rival NYC.

I lived in NJ and traveled to LA about once a month for 7 years. Its not like Manhattan but the freeways in Montreal are pretty messed up between 7-9 am and 3-6 pm. I travel up there for work about one day a month.
Montreal has a nest of freeways that all come togheter with the worst nexus seeming to be in a 5 mile circle around Dorval. The Champlain Bridge is also a mess in the morning going in and afternoon going outbound. I now avoid that and use the newer Rt 30 to the Point Mercia (sp?) bridge. And Sno I've been almost everywhere.

The freeways being messed up at rush hour turn a 25 minute trip from centreville to the airport into a 40 minute trip max. In NYC you are looking at a 20 minute trip turning into an hour to get to JFK. And I lived in Queens. Add another 30 minutes from downtown. It has something to do with 2.5-3M people living around Montreal as opposed to ten times that figure in NYC or LA. I'm sure that Montreal traffic drives you crazy if you catch it at the wrong time going to Tremblant, but trust me, I felt the same way about Hartford traffic on 91 when I left a little too late headed to Vermont. All traffic sucks, but Montreal is a BREEZE in comparison to NYC or LA. |
I have only been to Tremblant once and the traffic was a breeze because I timed it right.
I go to Montreal at least a day a month to visit customers. I seldom go from Centerville to Dorval. Most of my accounts are out in Longueuil and North of Dorval and that section around St Laurent is terrible just about anytime of the day at the intersection of 15 and 40. They have two major freeways that come together and go from 3-4 lanes each to 3 lanes total for like two miles and that is a fricking nightmare. Its not the LIE going east in the afternoon but it still is a cluster F because of the design of the roads.

No worries Coach, we'll all agree Montreal traffic sucks. You just went a little 'Loco on us there with the sweeping generalizations (rivals NYC) and we had to draw you back!

gotcha you city folk are protective of how bad your traffic is. I used to be sitting in Rt 80 for 90 mins everyday each way to and from work. Don't miss that one bit.
Boston is pretty bad too especially with the toll booths around Rt 128 and the Mass Pike. 376 in Pittsburgh is no ball of fun either with the two tunnels and a bunch of bridges - I drive all the way around that on the PA turnpike to avoid rush out and get from my big customer in Monroeville to PIT airport. I travel so much I know traffic everywhere. You guys mostly just have your one daily spot from hell.

Worst traffic spot in the country is West Side Highway to the GWB, three next slots are all in LA in terms of total per man hours lost a year. Pretty insane how much of your life can get sucked up stalled in traffic. Boston is really bad too, agreed.
|
I keep trying to buy into the 'Your train time is your own time' tag line.....so I don't drive rush hour often. When I have to it's that dreaded West Sid.....er, Joe DiMaggio Highway clusterf. When we visited Emerson and other Boston schools with our daughter getting out of Boston was a mess of similar magnitude!

I spend a lot of time driving to the mountains, especially in winter. But I've been walking to work since 1988. My cars rust out fast, but the upside on life is yoooge.

I'll be spending plenty of time driving in the mountains when I'm at Clarkson next year.

As bad as the salt is we live on a dirt road that really is sand. We go thru brakes and suspensions like crazy. We have decided to stop buying cars and lease them instead. I travel a lot for work but the rest of the time my commute is from my bed to my desk via the coffee maker. Maybe 40 steps total.

It's not about the salt as much as it is the not driving. Salt sucks too. But if you only drive 6-8 days a month your brakes and exhaust and body rust.

There's already a thread about that.

Unless you drive over 18k miles/year everyone should lease a new car |

Alright, so other people talking about cars in a TR thread is OK and when I say something related it isn't? All of the most recent posts are off topic, but you only chose to have your little hissy fit about mine. I can see right through all your double standards.

to tell you the truth is sometimes feels like the TR section does not get much attention and response so its good to see some conversation spurred from a TR

Two standards, one for skiers, one for non.
It's kind of like how you can listen to jimmy, but you can't hear jimmy. |
Shut the hell up. Just because you don't think I'm a real skier doesn't give you the excuse to treat me like shit. The forum rules apply to everyone, and you should know that because you're on the moderators list.
