Montreal - Need lodging and activity info

Jon951

Heading to WF Friday night, skiing Sat (conditions permitting ), then thinking about heading to Montreal for day 2 of the weekend. A few questions:

1. Best route from Lake Placid to Montreal
2. Place to lodge with wife (not seeking Taj Mahal..just a reasonable, clean place
3. Good restaurant for dinner
4. Non-skiing related sites/activities
5. Anything I should know other than we need our passports
6. Local music entertainment venues

Assuming I'll probably want to stay downtown where the action is. Never been there, so not really know what to expect or what's out there.

Thanks Much!

Re: Montreal - Need lodging and activity info

JTG4eva!
Only been a couple of times since my company's Corporate HQ has been in Montreal.  Stayed in the Marriott.  Nice, overlooks a park.  I've also stayed at Le Crystal, very nice, not cheap but reasonable.  Less than the Marriott.  Room is more of a suite, separate BR and living area, at least the one I was in.  I was on my Corporate rate, which generally isn't the most expensive room.

As for restaurants, Le Queue de Cheval is a very nice steakhouse (think Morton's).  The Keg is a steakhouse chain that is also good.

I've never been there long enough to experience the nightlife.  I did walk around one night after my co-worker went to bed.  Seemed like a fun vibe downtown.  I managed to resist all the hawking for a 'massage'.  I'd imagine most wifeys wouldn't be too down with a happy ending, unless they have male 'therapists'!

Thanks JTG,

I poked around and the Marriot looks quite nice for $109. Do you have any idea what the conversion rate is at the moment?

I'll let this topic soak thru the day and book tonight. Though we'll be in and out in one day, I'm sure it'll be worth the ride from LP to check the city out.

Thanks again

Stayed at the Best Western Europa downtown this past summer.  Couldn't be in a better location.  Hotel was decent.  Much different than a typical BW.

Food, everything was good.  You are right off Rue Ste-Catherine so walking distance to anything you need.

We go up often and I do business there as well.  From LP take 86 to 9n to the northway follow signs for Centre Ville (downtown)

Any of the hotel chains are good and on a Feb weekend you may be able to score a good rate.  I've stayed at the Marriot, Sheraton and Meridan which I like best.

Strolling around Vieux (old) Montreal is a must do

Take the Metro it's safe even late at night and cheap - buy a day pass instead of individual rides so you don't need to keep buying tickets

My fav restaurants are Jardin Nelson in Vieux Town.  The crepes are amazing for lunch.  Also Cafe Ferreira on Rue Peel is incredible Portuguese food.  The porcini crusted cod is mind blowing.  I'd suggest reservations here as it's very popular with the locals.

if You French Fry when you should Pizza you are going to have a bad time

Will do.

Also will hit this place. This sounds like something my wife would order, so I'm sure she'll be happy with your recommendation.

Now the skiing part...Any thoughts. It's been a long time since I hit Sutton Bromont, Owls Head, and I don't remember much except the conditions were not up to par for February the year I was there....most prob a carbon copy of this year's wonky season.

I believe La Reserve is a common suggestion around here? Check recent blog posts IIRC

I've not skied the townships but I have a friend who lives in Sutton.  He's a ski bum and he lives there for a reason.  I'd put it on your list.

Townships are washed out entirely. Either drive north towards Tremblant or NE towards QC.

There's a little mountain call MSS nearby that is cheap and fully snow covered, could be fun if you wake up hungover and still want to shuffle over there for 4 hours.

Like a Mountain Creek equivalent for city people, but looks way nicer.

Ok, so next question after deciding to ski Tremblant on Monday...

Are there any lift ticket deals out there for Monday skiing at Tremblant?

Thanks

Finally, any lodging recommendations for Tremblant? ..one night lodging needed for skiing next day at Tremblant. Sunday Feb 21st, checking out Monday Feb 22.

Want to spend approx. $125 US for pretty nice place. Will be driving my car, so offsite from mountain ok. Up to 5 miles away would be nice.
