Believe me Warp, I'm certainly old enough to have quite a bit of "perspective". Thing is, I don't necessarily recall the "good old days" all that fondly. A lot of shit 20-30 years ago just didn't work that well, be it cell phones, MTBs or social norms. Progress tends to be good and usually beats the alternative.
What any of that has to do the OP I have no idea! And yeah, the image of campy in short-shorts. OMFG. |

Yeah, I guess I should just chalk it up to old people being a little defensive about a time "back in my day" when things were better. Sometimes the racial overtones are hard to ignore, though... Particularly when talking about a sport that has gone from majority white back in the day to majority black now. And it does seem similar to the "let's take our country back" mentality of the Tea Party.
If you're just arguing fundamentals, then fine, Europeans have way better fundamentals than US players. But at a certain point athleticism trumps skill. And at an even higher point, a player comes along that combines skill and athleticism to change the game completely. And that's why LeBron, Jordan, etc. would school Cousy. |

You memory is clouded. The shot clock has been in use since the 1954-55 season. That is 59 years out of the 67 that the NBA has existed. There were never 6 teams. The least amount was in the late 1950s - 8. In 1949-1950 there were 17. They were at 14 in the mid 1960s and 20 by the early 1970s. Most of the predominantly white NBA players of the 1950s would not even get a sniff of todays NBA and would not even make a top 50 NCAA D1 program. The best NBA teams of the 1950s would be unable to compete with today's top NCAA D1 programs. The idea that the talent is now watered down is a laugh. The talent was there in the 1950s, they just were not allowed to play on an NBA team. NY Rens LeBron over MJ every day of the week. |

Yeah - Bill Russell was a regular Rick Barry (.893 ft %) Foul Shooting % Bill Russell .561 Shaq .527 Wilt .511 It is funny how numbers are at odds with our memories. |
More thread drift: Listened to a fascinating podcast this weekend about how almost worthlessly inaccurate human memory is. Every time we "remember" something, we modify the memory at least to some degree. And false memories are ridiculously easy to create in people. Memories are not "recordings" and when we remember, it's not like we hit the play-back button. It's way weirder and more interesting than that. Carry on. |
