Need a project? Lift chairs available!

I know this is the New York skiblog, but it might be worth a short drive to Killington if you want a lift chair project.

Killington has End-of-life'd the South Ridge Triple and is selling off the chairs.

SRT was an old YAN Lift installed in 1977.  This lift was unique because it formed a triangle, with separate lift towers in each direction. It was strange going up without empty chairs returning on the other side of the towers.  When the lift lines were unbearable, we always headed to the South Ridge Triple was the place to avoid the crowds on some nice terrain.

In many places, the chair was above the tree line.  What this meant was that it was windy and cold.   And it was slow.  However, the most memorable part of the ride was the point of the triangle.  The sign said HANG ON, SUDDEN TURNS COMING and they weren’t kidding.  It was a real jolt as you whipped around the wheel of the lift.

The chairs are available on the K'ton website.  No seat pads.  No safety bars.  Pickup at the base of the mountain road. $300.

I'll miss the turn...

When Killington decided that the lift was at the end of service this year, they removed the chairs and the cable.  Some of the towers remain in place, and the rumor is that it will eventually be replaced.  One rumor is that the Snowshed Quad will be replaced with a high-speed quad, and will be placed where the South Ridge Triple once stood.  With all of the flood damage, as well as the plans to replace the Peak Lodge, it is doubtful that the lift will be replaced any time soon due to $$$$ constraints.    Too bad, because the area it served is fun to ski.
