As MC said what happened to Upper Newts was probably inevitable. It was not a secret and is probably a lot safer now. Beyond BBA and the "alternate to headwaters" I didn't really follow the rest of what happen, will have to read back and focus.

You too? How'd you do? What did you think of the course (I prefered last year's - more "trail"). |
i ran little more than 2 minutes faster than last year but got third. i did not like the new course. you do not start a trail run with a loop around the parking lots. also, the downhill start until the turn-around made for a very a painful second half. i actually enjoyed the old course because it was a mix of terrain and inclines. still disappointed in the turnout. i don't think it will survive much longer. also, 30 bucks is a lot with no swag. most races cost a lot because of the money needed for police/traffic control. there were no costs for gore other than having someone place the cones around the parking lot.

I was more than 2 minutes faster as well and got fifth (I think I was third last year). Totally agree about the course. However I felt Gore did a good job with the prizes. Seemed that pretty much everyone walked away with some sort of prize (goggles, backpack, lots of lift tickets). My wife got a lift ticket for winning her div (we have passes anyway, but it's nice to have a freebie a friend). If nothing else, you at least get a gondi ride. I've got some ideas that I'll pass along to Emily for building participation - I hope the race continues. |
I've become tired of the constant threat of dropping off trail to take advantage of what Gore really has to offer in terms of challenging, technical Northeast skiing. The constant threat of NYS Law looming over me, and post one ridiculously excessive scolding by a not to be named patroller, I've been pushed me to commit to a yearly sabbatical to MRG for a week of free woods skiing, its really nirvana, being in Paradise after a foot of fresh POW! AND not constantly worry about some patroller heckling you, rather they see my 12 year old blow out of a stash and come up to her and give her the high five!
If NYS and Gore had guts enough to make logical and well thought out amendments to their overly restrictive laws aimed to "Protect us from ourselves" and loosen some of these restrictions, Gore could earn unprecedented status as the "Go To" mountain of the East for superior terrain, conditions and upload capabilities both on and OFF Piste. This would no doubt be a big draw to the mountain. BUT, is that really what we want? Beware of the double edged sword......a debate worthy of deep consideration. |
True, Gore will never be able to operate at its full money making potential until the nanny state lets up. They have some of the best terrain in the east, but far inferior snowmaking, grooming, and lodging options to what the Vermont mountains have, because the APA and the state won't let them. Most people on here blindly say that they don't care about anything but the terrain, but lots of people including me do care about more than that. Also, lots of people with MONEY care. Until Gore can get the same snowmaking, grooming, food, and lodging options, they will be left behind by Vermont by the highly profitable upper class crowd. All that money that goes to Vermont is money that Gore could have, but they don't because the state and the APA won't let them improve to their full potential, fully proven by not even making the top 20 list for the east while just about every major ski area in Vermont did. Even Holiday Valley which has less vertical than Mountain Creek made it.
I've lived in New York my entire life.

When you reference an absurd popularity contest as proof for Gore's issues you lose your credibility. Referencing HV is worse. It is SKI magazine not APRES SKI magazine. Does Gore have far inferior snowmaking ? Nope, 95% coverage, unlimited water, many new low e guns Does Gore have far inferior grooming? Nope. Have you even skied Gore 5 days yet? How would you even know if the grooming was inferior? Lodging is a problem, but you need to understand how the VT areas make big money - through real estate development. VT areas drive this business via sales and rentals. ORDA/Gore is not in the RE development business. |

This isn't even remotely accurate |
Maybe for you...... But for us mortal skiers, Gore does provide some of the best terrain in the East. |
Snoloco, you are "loco". One of Gore's unheralded resources is an outstanding grooming team. Whatever the weather, cold, ice, rain, powder, they consistently create excellent conditions. (And someone addressed snow making already)

I'd like to ski with snoloco sometime just so I can blast snow in his face

I've skied Abenaki glades 2 years ago when I made a left for the open trees from Barkeater. Glad they cleaned that up. I'm finally discovering Gore about going there for the last 10 years.
I went to Gore today, and was talking to patrol, but could not figure out where Nugget is. They said they were going to open it. Please enlighten this guy. |
