During the season, I'm usually at college in Potsdam, so I ski at Whiteface. In the summers I still live in Orange County, NY. 16-17 was my first season as a Whiteface passholder. My 10 takeaways:
1. When you get used to the vertical, runs at every other mountain start to feel shorter.
2. The Iceface name is largely incorrect. Except for a couple bad weekends that every mountain has, I could find good conditions for pretty much the entire day.
3. Stay away from the gondola for lift line free skiing all day long.
4. If you want to save money on food and still have a hot lunch, many people set up grills at midstation. I started doing so myself in the last few weeks of the season.
5. Management is not very good at opening the upper lifts on time often causing long lines at the gondola. On racing days, the Freeway lift will be open right at 8:30, and will allow one to avoid going to the bottom right away.
6. On non racing days, skiing the Freeway section can be like having your own private ski area.
7. You don't know what the wind hold situation will be unless you go and usually you are going to find less wind issues than you might predict.
8. Lots of people go into The Slides who don't belong in there.
9. Avoid Victoria when coming off the summit by taking Excelsior or Lower Sky instead. The latter trails are less crowded and more fun.
10. Hoyt's is my favorite trail by far, and I lapped it for hours on end a couple days.
I've lived in New York my entire life.
