Ski Butternut, MA Jan 3, 2015

NELSAP and fellow enthusiasts Tim (skijay), Paxton (skizilla), and his friend Jon had a great time at Ski Butternut on the 03rd! Despite a very challenging weather pattern over the last few weeks, they were 100% open with good coverage. With the good conditions and the holiday period, they were definitely busy, but with three quads and a triple serving the main mountain, lift lines were 5-10 mins max.

We enjoyed skiing the mountain, hitting up every trail. Favorite runs were Whip and Freewheeler.

Lunch was quite good in the Upper Lodge- chicken pot pie special included salad, cookies, and roll for $12.95.

Butternut was the site of the former G-Bar-S Ranch ski area - which operated from 1936-1957, with Butternut opening 5 years later. Several of the original trails are still in operation. For more information on G-Bar-S, visit G-Bar-S Ranch.

Butternut offers an interesting collection of trails and slopes. The trails are twisting, moderately pitched, and take advantage of the mountain's contours. Many are narrower as compared to other similar sized mountains, which many classic ski area enthusiasts enjoy (as does NELSAP!).

One of Butternut's best attributes is its midweek $25 ticket - one of the best deals in ski country!

Lucifer's Leap - quick short drop and then a mellow cruiser

Top Flight Quad - one of the very few modified non-double chairlifts on lattice towers

You described Butternut perfectly. My parents had a house in the Berkshires for many years and loved the place. I was usually bored to tears, but Butternut offers a great experience for most people. The snow was usually decent.
