Tried to go to Stowe Nordic (Mansfield), but they had no snow. The pointed me to the end of the road (closed in winter), just past the Stowe downhill entrance, saying there might be something there. Turned out to be a winter wonderland. The closed road was fully covered, center where lots of walkers used it was very compacted snow, but no ice. Left and right sides (6-8 ft wide each) were decently soft. I climbed up to the top using an old pair of steel edge Fischer E99's (basically somewhat wide XC skis) , found the last 1/4 was 2" of snow on top of ice- but that was the only icy part!
Saw a couple yahoos zoom in from a side trail. Talked later with a Stowe Nordic guy- he says that they come through the woods (no trail!) from the lift served area and that with the very low snow they have made a bad decision to be in the woods (now about 20", should be 50" to safely ski the woods, normally is 60" this time of year).
Stopped later at Trapp Nordic, they said their upper trails were in good shape. Their bakery is in very good shape!
Stopped at Garnet Hill Sunday Morning- walked the trails a bit from the lodge- pure ice in all directions. No one to talk to at the lodge, womens yoga going on, open, but no XC people. Their report claimed "pick and choose trails, use steel edges". I drove to Lapland Lake.
Skied Lapland Lake (NY XC) on Sunday- very soft due to warm weather, almost full coverage, easy to dodge icy spots. They were busy shoveling snow onto icy spots. These guys know how to take care of trails, have good food, and comfy fireplace to rest in front of, as well as a Finnish vibe- what more could you want?
