Every year, I start out my season with a mid-December trip to Salt Lake's Cottonwoods. More often than not, I hit paydirt with repeated powder days, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen this year. Solitude has received 95 inches so far and pretty much everything is covered. Only on the steepest slopes do you have to keep an eye out for rocks and snow snakes. Considering that there had been no new snow there since last weekend, conditions were really nice and the blazing sun softened the groomers while everything off-piste stayed soft and chalky.
