I'm more guilty of this than most. I think about the trade offs a lot. For me pictures are part of the experience. This was last winter at the top a famed narrow steep chute at Gore. I've banged down it a few times in spring, but certain never had a shot at an untracked T2B in "powder" before this moment. The guys I was with pulled up and offered it to me. I got to the crux and pulled up myself to grab a picture of NEWMAN! (FWIW being second was pretty awesome too): Here's a shot that I really didn't sacrifice anything for. If was taken in a moment when I was sitting with my sis having a beer, the weekend before last. She's not in it, but I'm really glad I have it. Sorry for the drift.

I love the photos it draws me to sites like this. Photos have brought a truth to advertising to the ski industry. I am old enough to remember when resort snow reports were less than truthful. Seeing the photos allows me to see the conditions and make informed decisions.

There's a difference between sharing some stuff with like-minded people, vs sharing everything with everyone.
When someone goPros their whole ski day and puts a two hour POV video on Youtube - too much. Facebook - too much in general. Trip reports and photos of great days that people post here for others to see and enjoy - good sharing (with one or two obvious exceptions of people who want to boast post instead of just sharing the vibe). |
I wasn't talking about taking some pics or editing vids or anything like that. I was getting more at the really narcissistic aspect of our culture these days and social media. I sort of recognized this when I was working at Pink Jeep Tours. I would get younger groups that didn't take any time to enjoy the experience or really look around at the place, they were just focused on getting pictures of themselves there to post on social media sites. It was like everyone they know or are "friends" with would see what an amazing experience they were having but in reality they never had an experience! It was all pretend adventure.
For the record, I love taking pictures and making video edits. It's a fun creative outlet, it's art man! What I was getting at was something completely different. I may have brought this up before, not sure but if so I apologize for beating a dead horse. It's really an interesting topic to me though. Nice pic Harv. |

Thanks, but for the life of me I don't know how to get sharp pictures in a storm.
Seems like the worst pictures = best skiing.

You would not buy it or into their ideas. Maybe you would read for a laugh. I look at Ski Mag photos and read the stories with the same approach I take to standing in the grocery isle waiting for my checker. Hey look, Kenyan West is taking hormones and considering a sex change......cool. I am not going to spend my money on that paper or trust anything I read in it. Same for Ski Mag----My subscription ran out years ago, that said, they mail 2-3 issues every year. Free. Always the gear. Kind of like local newspapers giving you 8-10 weeks subscription free. They report those false numbers to the companies paying for ads. |
