The Balsams still closed for 2013

The Balsams; great place for XC ski! But they have finance troubles still; looks like another year they will be closed.

I was at Suagarloaf for three days last February. I had a voucher for Saddleback, they didn't open due to high winds. I set my GPS for Cannon. Suddenly the road looked familiar and I was passing through the notch, it was puking snow. I had visions of skiing the Balsams in the snow, by myself. Unfortunately, they were closed. I've never skied there, but have driven past several times. From what I've read, it's not much of a ski hill, but it would have been fun that day. The first time I drove through, the hotel reminded me of the  movie The Shining. I hope the new owners are able to resurrect the place. It is in the middle of nowhere.

Too bad. Balsams is a really nice mountain. Those seeking an adrenaline fix need not make the journey when they open back up. Definitely would be a top recommendation for families looking for a mid-sized area with lots of other winter stuff to do during a weekend getaway.
