Tree Well Tragedy at Alpental, WA

An often overlooked hazard... the Avalanche's silent, stationary cousin, the Tree Well.  I don't think this too much of an issue in the deciduous forests of the EC, but if you are playing in the conifers out here, be careful.

45 year old guy riding solo... sounds eerily like my typical midweek profile

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. -- A man skiing at the Alpental Ski area was found dead Sunday after falling into a tree well, King County Sheriff's Office says.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Sunday.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Richard Glade, 45. He died as asphyxia due to immersion in snow.

A spokesman for the Summit at Snoqualmie said the victim was skiing with someone he met on the chair lift.

They went to the Eisfallen Trail where there was allot of powder between the trees

The other skier saw the victim fall into a tree well.

He then yelled for help to get him out. Two other skiers showed up – and were able to pull the victim out. One of the skiers initiated CPR right away while the other called 911.

Ski Patrol arrived with a defibrillator within minutes. Paramedics also tried to revive the man.

Very sad. More common than avalanche fatalities too, at least in bounds. I've gotten in to some very sticky situations when i was younger above 3500' in deep snow, it is definitely something to look out for.

Major hazard for snowboarders, because they go in head first and can't get the damn board off upside down.

PeeTex
We have spruce traps in the adirondacks
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.
