WINDHAM -- State Police at Catskill are investigating a fatal skiing accident at the Windham Mountain Ski Resort.
A 69-year-old woman died Friday morning when she fell, slid off the more advanced "Wedgie" ski trail and struck a tree, said State Police.
The woman, identified as 69-year-old Joan Sabatini of Yardly, Pa., was treated for extensive head injuries at the mountain, then transported to Columbia Memoral Hospital in Hudson.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"We don't currently know the reason for her fall, or whether it was the result of an underlying medical condition," Windham Mountain president Tim Woods said in a statement. "Either way, we're devastated by this tragedy, and our entire staff grieves with her family and friends."
Sabatini was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and was said to be a novice skier, according to State Police.
Conditions at the time of the accident were clear, with "calm winds and groomed packed powder surfaces," said Woods.
