When I go to the Reno area I stay south in Carson city at the Marriott Courtyard. Lots of good restaurants in the area, good access to Heavenly, Kirkwood and Mt. Rose. When staying up on the lake I have stayed at the Granlibaken which is real close to Squaw & Alpine Meadows. I am sure others will have much different recommendations as there are a lot of choices.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Reno is a shit hole. Drive up the hill and stay in Truckee.  It's worth the extra 500 bucks... And your super close to to the best mountains in Cali.  If it snows when your there the road up to Truckee closes and it's a 3 hour drive around the lake.

Truckee is a great little town. I almost moved there the last time I was there. Enjoy your trip , it's close enough to everything.

True story: Reno made my girlfriend cry.

Really. About four or five years ago I took a few nights in Reno after a Heavenly stay, just to check it out as a possible retirement move. No state taxes, the real estate was rock bottom cheap from the housing crash (Nevada got hit hard), and, of course, Tahoe. I booked a room in one of the casinos downtown. Yee gads, that was sleazy. Pawn shops and petty criminals and gamblers and old people. But, cheap. Then, we drove through a few neighborhoods outside of the downtown, including a Del Webb empty nester downsizing development. Nice, brand new, cheap little houses built, on, essentially, brown and red clay. That's when she cried. I said, hey, don't worry, this isn't turning me on, either, nosiree. Especially when she cried.

It was sorta like a personal country song come to life.

You were looking in the wrong place. You needed to look at the Carson Valley just south of Carson City. It is a green valley close to S Lake Tahoe with a high desert climate.

There's a really good pizza place in Truckee, http://www.bestpiestruckee.com/ , my brother is friends with the owner, I visited here back in 2014 when I was in Squaw.  Check it out

Re: Reno

Marcski
Just got this from Squaw this evening in an email blast:

":This storm has delivered over 2.5 feet of snow and the forecast is calling for more than 4 feet of snow through Thursday. That's FEET of new snow covering the best, most varied terrain in Tahoe. From low angle powder, to groomers, to steep and deep, we've got it covered and ready for you with feet of new snow goodness. Make your plans. Call in sick. Do what you need to do. Get here. Oh, and how sweet is this? You can ski for less than $93/day with our Tahoe Super 4."
