Wife Wants Patio Furniture for Mother's Day

Ugh. Been putting this off but the time is here. We "need" a table and chairs for the patio as our 20 year old Amish-built picnic table finally rotted away into spores.  Any ideas for something, decent quality that won't break the bank?

I've always been a fan of wrought iron stuff for outdoors.

Lawn furniture is something you buy in late summer which means July in the Daks.  Lowes puts this stuff on sale for half off.  We got a nice outdoor couch and table a couple years ago at Lowes.

For a table and chairs go metal as long as you take it in the winter it lasts a long time.  We still use table and chairs I bought in the mid 90's.  Just get nice cushions to sit on.

For price/value you can't beat what I got for my wife just after we got married.
I picked up a big cable spool on the side of the road and 4 unsplit firewood logs

My father made a gorgeous table out of such a spool.  He was great with his hands and could finish furniture.  Used it my whole childhood.

We've done ok with stuff from Home Depot and the big box stores.  It's definitely lower cost, and if can last a while, although the finishes wear quickly.

You also can't go wrong investing in the higher end stuff.  Yes, it can be a lot more expensive than the big box stores, but we had a Homecrest set that looked as good after 20 years as the day we bought it.  As long as you don't get sick of looking at it, the high end stuff can be very cost effective over time.

Check out those wall murals. At least you can dream about skiing while she is shopping.

I'm sure I can give you lots of things Zelda will like!  We picked up a nice Frontgate cast iron set at the end of last season for the deck.  I'm sure this stuff will last 25 years!  Sometimes you do get what you pay for, if you are in a position to be able make a long term investment in outdoor furniture.

That phrase makes me itchy.

Just in case you are wondering, I negotiated a yooge deal, it will make your head spin. 10% off, free delivery and the flatlander's holy grail, guaranteed 50 ski days next season.

We actually have a homecrest set which I bought in 2000, still looks brand new.We do pull the chairs inside every night though, the table stays out all year uncovered. It just needs a good scrubbing every spring.

Don't be cheap. Happy wife, happy life.

I live in Saratoga and bought Telescope outdoor furniture when we rebuilt our front porch 7 years ago.  They make quality outdoor furniture in Granville, NY.  They sometimes have good clearance sales in July or August, when we bought our stuff.

If your furniture will be sheltered from the elements, like a breezeway, sheltered porch or deck, I would recommend getting past the sticker shock.  If you take care of it, the furniture can be passed along to your kids.

My parents bought Brown Jordan Tamiami porch furniture which they kept in great condition for 35 years.  None of the heirs wanted it, but as executor I got a good price for it.

Treat your wife well.

Telescope Casual is good stuff.

The only reason we moved on from our Homecrest set after 20 years was that my wife got tired of having cushion chairs.  Rather than replace a set of cushions we sold the chairs.  We are still using the table, moved it down by the pool.

It was a lot. We got something made out of recycled plastic something. Was going to use our tax refund for a new roof but probably won't have enough now. Here comes year 26 on a 25 year roof.

My wife has been wanting a backyard table set to replace our 20+ year old wood table for several years. It's rotting away.

She is awesome, and seems to grow more awesome ever year. This felt really good to give her something that will make her smile. Delivery in 2 weeks.
