Under off topic the description should be not whatever but more accurately whatever Harv doesn't want in the wood stove

True, the structure was originally based on my own idea. I remember back in 2010 when we started, James wanted one forum, no sub forums.  I like the idea of having the main discussion forum focused on skiing and the mountains.  IMO that is the topic.

Since we are in the OT... Coach if this was your site how would you define subforums? Let's say you were going to have 5 total. Or do you agree with James on the one forum idea?  Just curious more than anything else.

For clarification, I was in favor of one forum that would cover The Woodstove, Trip Reports, and Ski Conditions. The other forums (weather, gear, off-topic) should be separate.

IMO, it's better the way it is.

I would lean towards combining some topics

The gear and other topics don't get enough traffic except for the TR and conditions in the winter.  Particuly the gear topic is way under used though I would still put for sale in a separate section.  I'd prolly combine the TR and snow conditions into one topic.

Summer and off topic for really non related stuff.  Woodstove to me also is sort of a way to talk about living in the mountains and skiing.  Gear discussions are part of that.

It will never be perfect, however it seems to be working well enough
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

I'd like to see TR's bundled with the Wood-stove.  As soon as I log onto NYSB, I already hit the all topics view.

Ok, nothing to see here.  (I always get suckered by clicky-bait thread titles like "ARRRRRGH")

The Topics View does IMO make the one forum discussion moot.  If you want one forum, there it is with one click. Sadly it is one of the features I'll miss when we move the site over to a mobile-friendly set up (someday). It's odd that more forum software options don't offer it.

In this thread you've got five different ideas on how to organize the forum.  When I built the thing I was the only one around, so I went with my idea.  If you search for old posts a lot (I do) the sub forum structure makes it way easier.

I agree with P. It may not be perfect but it works ok.

It's just fine the way it is.  Count me as another who likes the Topics View.

I had never clicked on the topics view until tonight

I love this!  It would dramatically increase discussion on non Woodstove topics

LOL would? Feature is 5 years old.

Somebody is using the Topics View as it had 54,000 page views in the last 12 months.

Feel weird pushing the guide at this late point in the cycle, but hey check it out.

Ha!  I'm with Coach.  I too have never used the topics view... DOH!  In plain sight - that's the problem.  Too obvious.
Make it more cryptic Harv.  Who wants to do things the easy way... Not me.  I'm a freeheeler.
