87 year old Hinterlandian still has all his skis

Sick Bird Rider
Inspiring dude but don't show this to my wife:

This 87-year-old skier still races and has a basement packed full of every pair of skis he's owned

I have many of the of the skis of my life but not all - how about you other old guys?

I have my first pair of skis, but I guess my mother ditched the beartrap bindings at some point.  Screw-in edges.  Close to 50 years old.

Too late for me. I threw one pair away already and lost my originals somewhere along the way in a move

That's pretty cool

My first pair of skis are long gone as well. I want to say they were from Sears. I remember they were red, that's about all I remember.

Without going out to the garage and doing inventory, this is what I came up with:

Skis I don't have that I remember (in order of possession):

- Arlbergs with screw-on edges and cable bindings (first pair that I can remember)
- Fischer Alu something or other
- Rossignol Allais Major
- Rossignol GS (that was the model name)
- Fischer Big Stix 75

Metal-edged skis I still have:

- Dynastar MPI with Salomon 502s (70s vintage)
- Atomic Team RS (Reisenslalom) with Tyrolia somethings (80s vintage)
- Rossignol Sick Bird (mounted w/ BD tele bindings)
- Line Sir Francis Bacon w/ Salomon STH 12
- Voile Charger BC (mounted w/ BD tele bindings)

Plus assorted XC skis, Fischer S-Bounds, and the Karhu XCD collection (GT, Comp, Supreme, Extreme)

And a snowboard (Burton Rippey 158)

It is a disease for sure.

Great article.  Did you notice how he looks so much younger than 87 in that pic!  He doesn't seem to be a one ski quiver type of guy, either...skiing 82 years and he has 60 plus pairs of skis!!  So, the question arises, is it the skiing or the obsession that is keeping him young?

Fairly anecdotal but I had one grandfather who was a skier and one who was not.

The one who wasn't a skier wasn't much into any physical sports.  He lived to be 92.  Drove and was independent until he was 90.

The one who skied started late, maybe in his 40s but skied into his 70s.  I'm not exactly sure when he quit.  He lived to be 84.  He was independent and drove up until his last few months.

Not sure it matters any.  I'm pretty sure it's 95% genes, 5% lifestyle.
