At Least 60 Dead in Paris Shootings

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/13/world/paris-shooting/

I'm sure many of you have heard about this already, but because I've actually been to Paris, I thought I'd make a thread for it.  I've seen news coverage for plenty of other shootings, but none of this scale that took place somewhere that I'd been to.
I've lived in New York my entire life.

Truly sad. 30 years ago I roamed around Europe without a care in the world. Met the greatest people and had the best of times, will never forget it. Wondering if I  was just young and naive . Would have trouble letting my kids share the same experience

Fuckin terrorist. Such cowardly acts make me sick to my stomach. Yet our president claims ISIS has been contained and is not gaining strength. What the fuck ever.

Guess the terrorists didn't read the "gun free zone" signs. We need to educate these poor "refugees"

Bernie says global warming is to blame for ISIS.   Stupidest comment by a candidate since Obama said you didn't build that or Palin could see Russia from her backyard.

Time to take ole Bernie to the dog track and leave him there drooling on himself.  It was only a matter of time he said something so crazy even his supporters are going WTF Bern.

When you're actually strong you don't need to go around terrorizing everyone. They're down to 60 recruits a day from 1k and losing cities before France bombed the shit out of them. They are contained. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of fuckwits out there that don't mind dying as long as they take out a few others with them.

It was a famine that started the shitshow in Syria though FWIW. People were hungry and Assad offered them a belly full of lead, which caused the breakdown. I don't think global warming is directly attributable to what has been a very slow drying of northern africa and the ME over the past 3000 years, but it certainly can't help that temps are demonstrably higher in the past 100 years than they were the previous thousand.

or when Bush said they had weapons of mass destruction.

Actually Bernie is spot on.  exceeding our carrying capacity is absolutely causing more violence on this planet.  well fed people are a content society.  Hungry people are angry people.  the people cant farm the people rise up.

And Bernie is crushing TrumpsterDaDumpster in all the head2head polls!!  If he beats Hillary he's the next president!!!

At least Box-o-rocks is doing one thing smart and not committing ground troops. We should attack the money sources, cut off their ability to move oil, sever the pipelines, blow up the pumping stations and blow up any truck bigger than a pickup from moving out of the oil fields.

Really? Destroy more infrastructure, and piss more people off... sounds like an action that would stimulate terrorist recruitment as opposed to a solution to the problem.

In my opinion, this guy provides a pretty analysis of the root cause of this problem:

Yes - He pretty much has it right except for a few points. But he does not offer a solution and neither do you. Inaction is not a solution. We need to cut off the money supply, we don't need to turn the lights out but we need to deny them access to an economy. We can't worry about who we piss off, they are already pissed off.

I don't offer a solution because I really don't think there is one.  This is the new normal.  Terrorism and mass killings are here to stay.  Quite honestly, I'm getting used to it, and so should you.  In case you haven't noticed, it's been going on for quite some time now.  We'll get ISIS... just like we got Al Qaeda... what stupid group of fanatical group of assholes is next?. I don't know, but there will certainly be someone.  I can guarantee it.

I agree that we need to cutoff the money.  I'm against blowing anything up.  There are smarter tactical maneuvers in this war... blowing things up is not going to get us anywhere.

Quite honestly, I don't really fear terrorism... I hope that I am lucky enough never to be a victim of an attack.  For some reason, I feel like the odds of being a victim of an attack are similar to that of winning the Powerball; therefore the level of fear that is generated from an attack is a bit overblown.  Don't get me wrong, it's a tragedy, but I think the threat to "national security" is sensationalized by the media, and the government.

What are the general odds of being a victim of a terrorist attack?  Does anyone know?

depends on were you live..If you live in bum fuck no where,(i say that with peace and love) I think you are pretty safe.

fair amount of people on this site live and work in or around NYC..We have a pretty good chance of seeing or being part of terrorist act. I don't think anyone in my neighborhood doesn't know someone who died or was injured in 9/11..Just saying

Anybody surprised?

Doesn't seem to hard to imagine that pumping weapons into Syria would be a total fail.

You'd think that now, finally, embarrassed, the US would crack down on the banks and oil companies getting rich on ISIS commerce.

I wonder if ISIS really thinks DC is the "heart of America."  I don't.

Undoubtedly, an attack anywhere is tragic. I agree.  There are areas where your odds are higher, but at the end of the day, the odds of being a victim are still small.  For me, I just don't see this as a "national security" issue.  Will we ever see fanatical terrorists occupy US soil?  Will terrorists attacks ever be a threat to the sovereignty of the US?  These are threats to national security... not individual attacks.  In my opinion, we need to take a more realistic approach.  There is only some much that can be done before we reach the point of diminishing returns.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should sit on our hands.  I just don't think blowing things up is a viable solution.  There will be no victory.  We need to be more realistic about what constitutes success.

Congrats Scotty.  You are a 1%er.  Only 1% of the population are bat shit crazy enough to believe this line of bs

Muslims extremists would be killing Christians and Jews regardless of the temperature.  This evening now 30 state Governors are refusing Syrain refugees up from 23 this morning.  NYS has banned Fan Duel so maybe they can now now on to a true public safety matter and say no to refugees that are not properly screened.
