Derek Jeter goes downtown.

Look I haven't watched even a full inning of baseball in over two years.

If you have any interest in the game this was quite a moment:

Jeter goes:

5 for 5 on the day.
Has the game winning hit.
Homers for his 3000th career hit.

To me it's actually more amazing than Reggie's three homers in one World Series Game 7.

Agreed. The man is an amazing ball player. Only #28 of all the thousands of ball players to reach 3000 hits . 5 for 5 and all dat. Wow!!

I'm one who finds b-bal zzzzzzz. BUT credit is way due.

It's hard for us mere mortals to realize exactly how much it takes to reach these heights. Just making the majors in any sport is phenom. Then setting a level very few majors ever reached is truly beyond amazing. The life long work, the dedication, the ability to avoid injury is waaaayyyyy stacked against you.

Congrats Mr. Jeter!!!!!

Reggie Jackson - "Rats!"

Mantle - " wAHT? ?

Diamagio " How da hell?!!"

ET AL - " WTF!!! "

All eclipsed by Jeter.

Seriously, Walter Peyton, Bret Favre and Folks like that are unreal. Herculian effort.

Suck it Bonds !!!

Totally true, that guy who gave that ball away is an idiot . . .

I heard he's going to get hit with a $14,000 ta bill . . . Hope he likes his job at Verizon.

I saw that story. I still don't see how they could tax that ball as income.

If they did I'd be sending my new best bud DJ an email ... "Oh... Derek...."

He got quite a bit of swag from the Yankees, Some 50k worth. That's what he's being taxed on.

Yep . . . but the ball was worth $500K (they say).

He should have sold the thing, then paid the taxes out of that . . .

Or at least gotten some cash compensation in addition to the 50k worth of freebies.

He said that, since he's only 23, he's got "plenty of time" to make money.  I don't think people understand the value of money.  $500,000 is probably equal to 20 years salary at his job (customer service rep for Verizon).  chances like this don't come around every day.  Jeter has made $205,000,000 over his career according to Wikipedia.  I told someone else, it's like winning the lottery and giving the ticket to Bill Gates.

Sounds like a good plan too me. ^^^

Side note. Aside from this particular home run ball, which as MC2 noted is valuable, people are goofy about catching them. That one guy died, then at the home run derby days later another guy went over the railing trying to catch a ball, almost plummeting down.

Help is on the way:

Now if only Jeter would offer to pay off his student loan . . .
