Earl Scruggs was The Man as far a the banjo was concerned. Here is a great article on his life and influence on modern acoustic music, plus a few more videos.
"Everyone who plays banjo, bluegrass or acoustic folk music owes a giant debt to Earl Scruggs. Without him there would be no Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show or Mumford and Sons. He was singularly the most important banjo player of all time."
I particularly like this video, not only are the multiple banjoists totally cool, the hairstyles are unreal:
I LOVE Bluegrass. Both my wife and myself got new cars and IMHO, one of the best things about the satellite is the Bluegrass channel. I'm thinking of keeping the satellite in my car pretty much just for the bluegrass channel (and the jam band channel). They play a lot of scruggs on there!!
One of my favorite things about Platty (besides the snow and terrain and lack of crowds) is the bluegrass pickup jam in the lodge every Saturday after the lifts stop!
Great find, NJ. You have to admire how (with a few exceptions for family picnics and old friends) Scruggs always showed up to play with perfect hair and a shirt and tie. I love the Doc Watson segments, he is my guitar hero.
It's been all banjo, all day at my house. ES, John McEuen, Mumford & Sons, hmm, next? Maybe a little John Hartford followed by some Bela Fleck to mix it up a bit.
