First real cold snap of the season should happen this coming weekend..
Harv, I'm going way out on a limb here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the high peaks see their first flakes..

Patchy frost this morning at SBR HQ. Leaves are getting nice and colourful. Mice are coming inside, keeping the cat busy. Fall is definitely here. Woo hoo!

Maybe so, but IMO this map is notable. First time I've seen snow in the CONUS on the GFS 96 hr map:

LH over on FIS seems quite interested in this event. Not committed yet to a forecast but sounds like he is growing in excitement. That map looks quite good for Whiteface.

What is the skinny on skinning at Whiteface. I see a lot of early season reports from the Auto Road. But I can't see driving all that way for the auto road. Skinning allowed on the main mountain? I know it is a lot of hiking before high enough vert for skiing (which I assume vert is why folks go up the auto road... quicker to the snow?). Ideally NoVT gets in on the action, that would be a shorter drive.

Maybe I am getting ahead of myself. I want at least 4 thick and wet inches before I'd consider it.

Should be interesting to see who posts the first TR this year.

Last year's Whiteface Toll Road Ski, while admittedly low angle, was pretty exciting IMO. That was Oct 16.

zero line at 850 never even gets to the ADK's and with thickness in the 550's..just too warm and a south east wind aloft..

As soon as there's more than 2" on the Toll Road, I'm up there. Already talked to MC2 about it.

River.. I'll have skins this time too! NO more snowshoes.

Unfortunately.. I'm leaning towards no snow on this one. 96hr precip chart is showing nothing. According to NOAA, high peaks backed out of the chance snow. Lows only around 36. Maybe if I open a few freezers up there...

Provided I get lucky enough for this to happen on a day I don't have class, I'll be there too.
