Re: Gore Conditions

I thought things were decent early but even by late morning I agree with matt. Open pit, sleeping bear and wild air seemed to hold up best. Uncas and twister were pretty bad even before lunch.

Today I did Uncas first run (9:00 am) so I could get to the summit before it got bad. It was already pretty scratchy. I did hear lies was very good today, but didn't want to chance it myself. Open pit and headwaters were good. Overall it held up a bit better today, but not great.

There looks like a lot of snow on echo so hopefully that opens soon.

The frozen cord lasted about an hour then it was hockey time. It was bad. The weather this week  looks like next weekend might be more of the same. Also, from the rumor mill heard on the Gondi, pineknot and chati will remain unblown and rely on natural snow. Has the janitor heard anything? It seems like gore is in economy mode. And, as long as i am ranting, the bathroom at the saddle reminds me of the worse gas station bathrooms from the 70's. I swear that there must be an open sewer below.

I agree with the above. Skiing was just ok this weekend.  I'm definitely feeling a lack of effort by Gore this year.  They sent me a survey recently and I was pretty honest with my disappointment, particularly with the lack of snowmaking and open terrain. I haven't experienced the men's room at the Saddle firsthand, but I have been hearing from CMR for years about how disgusting it is.  That went into the survey too.

The woods are going to hell . They took the over the maintenance and dont do anything. Trees down and whippers growing up.They need to employ a full time woodchuck to oversee them if they want to keep up.
Tele turns are optional not mandatory.

Gore skied much better yesterday, but that was likely mostly due to the light midweek crowds. Uncas still needs work and if pine knot isn't going to get any man made, it's probably not going to improve much. Lower uncas was amazing so it's pretty clear that it just can't handle all the traffic going to straightbrook. Maybe wood in will help.

I agree with the prior assessments that overall conditions at Gore have taken a turn for the worse over the last 2 years or so. A few years back when the bought a a new groomer or two they really stepped up their game but now it seems like a step backwards.

Well... at least they're blowing snow Hedges, The Gully, Cedars, Pete Gay, and Little Cloud!

And Tahawus, according to the website.  Looks like they are making a push to fully open the North Side (maybe even Powder Pass if there is enough snow tonight and it holds up through the warmup on Wed/Th?) and at least draw some people to the Burnt Ridge quad to disburse the crowds this weekend.

EDIT:  Also if they are blowing Little Cloud I assume that means they will open the double chair this weekend.  More crowd disbursement.

I'm cool with crowd distribution for sure, but maybe not at the cost of having the summit remain an icy mess. Something in Gore's set-up doesn't allow them to divide and conquer I guess.

I also struggle with the marketing approach of "Hey! We're blowing snow on The Gully!".

Last weekend was not crowded at all, not sure if it was the cold/NFL playoffs or if the product has just been so-so. Just wish Gore would do a little more. I think they know they have the day trip crowd (which includes me and my family) essentially "held hostage" by geography.

Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

If you are within day-trip range (which I consider an approx. 2 hour drive) of Gore, I would think you have lots of big mountain options in Vermont for day trips.  Unless you are west of Gore -- but in that case you have lake effect hills.  I'm in Poughkeepsie and I wish I had a choice of skiing Stratton, Okemo and Killington in the morning without getting up at 4:00 a.m.

Agree with you on the marketing approach.  "We're running the J-bar this weekend!"

I live about 45 minutes away. Killington/Pico are about 1.5 hours. If I didn't have kids, I would ski there more often. The kids programs at Gore are great, but the skiing is getting pretty boring. I do also like the regulars who ski Gore. Lots of cool people there. Maybe if we get two feet of snow soon and I can ski in some trees things will change for me. (fingers crossed)

Today was a rather bizarre day.  Lot half full, lots of college kids still running around.  They had two cats running on Echo, we'll see that soon.  Also, they are fully blown on both hullabaloo and lower darby.  Just have to push that stuff down and they're good to go.  They were really working on northside to.  I think we'll see burnt ridge and the high peaks chair running by the weekend.  We'll also see the rest of the north side as well.

Weird thing today was straight brook chair didn't open till after 12pm.  They had a power issue with it.  They tied it into a generator to get it spinning...

So, with that, we got afternoon cord up there.  Lies as great.  Hawkeye was great.  Really weird to have that great of snow for the later part of the day.  On the lower mountain showcase and twister need some help.  Very windy today when I left.  Temperatures dropped throughout the day.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm thinking Killington next year. Might be fun to switch it up.
