I guess "family" means different things to different people.
When my kids were young, Belleayre was my "family" mountain mainly because it was much less expensive during holiday periods than the VT mountains. I had to sacrifice better snowmaking in VT to make the trip affordable. For me it was a good choice.
For keeping gore open later in the season, I would consider blasting Showcase and then using wood in and the double to provide access to the summit. The darkside holds the snow better as well. Uncas just gets too much sun I think to make it reliable for spring skiing.
They should have built another chair to get novice and intermediate skiers to the top of Bear Mountain, and rerouted the original Gondy straight to the top. With the advanced skiers heading straight to the top a high speed quad to bear would have been enough.
As a downstater I want to add that Gore's biggest asset is it's distance and crowd.
It doesn't get as much snow as Vermont,
The lift design is dumb,
It doesn't stay open late in the season,
But what else do I have that's the same distance or less?
The Cats which are small, crowded family mountains for day trippers.
Okemo is flat,
Stratton is crowded and kinda flat,
Mount Snow does have a decent backside with a little bit of pitch, but also gets incredibly crowded.
Despite Gore's faults it's still a good deal for us downstaters.
How can you be a family mountain without large amounts of snowmaking, grooming, and high speed lifts? When I think "family mountain", Stratton, Windham, and Okemo tend to come to mind first.
High speed lifts are definitely not a requirement for a "family mountain." Especially for families on a tight budget. Or families who get their little ones on snow at Alta before they are 4. I'll leave it at that since this is a Gore thread.
The perfect family mountain for family’s with kids has a comfortable lodge, all trails end at that lodge and terrain is relatively mild with several options for more of a challenge. They should also be easy on the pocket book. McCauley & Royal are examples, Even Maple, Willard and Pisgah.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.
I suspect I opened Pandora’s Box with that Gondi pic.....what great conversation. Too bad it’s not happening on the Base Lodge Deck, over cold beers on a sunny Saturday afternoon in early May....fresh off a corn fest download from the summit of course!!

I hate to sound like a broken record, but have you tried skiing at Plattekill?
Just checked Gore web site and they announced the will re-open this weekend.....and....the weather forecast is screaming CORN......Sunday looks like its peaking at almost 50 degrees and sunny!
Breaking out the Monoski so I can kick my ass one last time this season.....
Just be mindful of the forecasted night lows especially if skies are clear. Really drops quickly and slow recovery although certainly better in April. The April sun is as powerful as the August sun. Gotta consider both variables
