I left my home at 4:30 am and rolled into the cool and foggy parking lot at 8:40.
EDeO et al were still in the lodge and we had a full gondola to go up. As we got near the top of Bear Mtn we popped out into the sunshine, revealing a sea of clouds. Topridge Triple Uncas Summit towards Chatiemac/Hawekeye It was pretty awesome. It was sunny and warm at the top. Spring conditions, soft and buttery. Everything that was open skied really well: Hawkeye, Lies, Open Pit, Lower Darby, Hullabaloo, Topridge, Uncas. It was all fun. We stayed up top all day, except to come down to drop clothing and pick up food and beverages for lunch. We took Showcase/Sleighride each time and they skied well considering their lower elevations and higher slush factor. I shed the ski pants and put on a green skirt EDeO suggested we check out BBA. I was skeptical, but was game if he wanted to go. The first 30-40 feet of the entrance were completely bare, but Ed suggested it was going to be better once we got in. He walked over the brown with his skis on. I carried my skis. We got in and slid on rotten snow to the 3 choices. There was no snow connection to Hot Damn or Thumper so we opted for the left BBA option. We made our way down on the dirty ribbons so rotting snow. The narrow lower section would require a varsity move on a thin steep strip of snow into the gully and onto the trail, so we decided to take our skis off and walk the final pitch. Ed did a total face plant when he hit the trail because the snow was so rotted that he went down deep with forward momentum. They ran the Straightbrook quad until 3:45 so we got an extra run. We were the last off the mountain at 4:20 Lots of festivity on the patio. Fun St Paddy's celebration. |
I'm loving all these inversion photos, I experienced it myself at Platty, Camp's thread's got one from Whiteface. Looks like you had quite the view yourself. It is spectacular isn't it, so unusual. Haven't been to Gore since March 19th last year, it's on my radar for the weekend. What'll be left after a week of 70+ temps? Platty and Elk were both great this weekend. RIP GP, skied it Thursday, it wasn't bad, looked like hell from the base. After that experience, and the weather forecast, I didn't expect them to make it till the weekend. Hard to believe the difference between the amount of snow at Elk compared to Greek. Do they just make more snow? They are much farther South than GP.

Love your description of BBA. I described the woods as being "completely out of play" in my report, obviously I should have checked with you & Ed first! Here's another couple pics showing the cool inversion that lasted all of Saturday morning: |

Love the skirt action. ..and the PDQ storytelling in general. And the fact that EDeO will basically go into the trees from first frost until fourth of July.

Woods were DEFINITELY out of play on Saturday...we confirmed it in honor of Rick Beardsley.
I rocked a skirt on Sunday too, but haven't seen any pix of me anywhere yet. I think there's at least one on EDeO's camera. |
