Gore Mtn 3/24/11

Snowhunter
I just posted this under Gore conditions but then I got to thinking that maybe it belongs here under trip reports so here it is again:

Skied Gore 3/24 all day and I think it was the best day I've had there since I started skiing there 3 yrs ago (and that's saying something since I've had a few great days there this year).  I skied all over the mountain averaging 2 runs per trail.  I run blacks but Rumor, Lies, Upper Darby and Lower Steilhang are still just a dream for me but I took on all the other trails and had an absolute blast!  I couldn't say which was my favorite as they were all in great shape and I was just bouncing around the mountain getting in as many runs as I could.  It was packed powder just about everywhere.  The bottom of Sagamore was a little soft but nothing that really slowed me down.  Blues skies all morning and just cool enough for me to not shed any layers.  The mountain was deserted and I completed many runs without seeing another skier.  There were a few flurries later in the day up top just to add to the mood a bit.  My legs were burning at the end of the day but I didn't want it to end.  I'm still smiling from my day and trying to figure out when I can get back there before spring really sets in.

Welcome Snowhunter.  When I saw your post in the Conditions Forum, I thought ... that could go in Conditions or Trip Reports.  There's no right or wrong really - either place is ok. Usually if it's a little longer, like your post above, I'd probably put it in this forum.

Does sound like a great day. IMO if your legs aren't burning at the end of the day ... you left something on the table.

If you'da been at Gore today who knows... it could have been your day for Rumor, as it was groomed overnight.

Thanks for posting.

Snowhunter-

Ditto what Harv wrote, it seems like you had an awesome day. Your post states that you have yet to venture onto Gore's double-blacks on the Trail Map...but wait, there is so much more to explore.  Perhaps you may need some companions to assist you in these endeavors?  If you can figure out when you can schedule a return engagement to Gore, let us know, we can all go left, right, and continue to move forward down the hill.   There is nothing better than guiding a new shipmate safely through the steeps, deeps, gnarlies and NFW's that this Rock has to offer.

And when Spring does kick in, it only gets better.

All the best, hope to ski you soon.

Thanks Harvey44.  I've been a long time lurker here and have gained much valuable info and been entertained so I figured it's time to try and give something back.  I agree about the legs, unfortunately the last few years that burning feeling has been coming waaaay too early but Thursday was so great that it didn't strain them like usual and I was able to go until 3:30 (man I miss the days when I was on the mountain when the lifts opened until they threw me off but most days I just can't manage that anymore).

Thanks 64ER.  That all sounds really great.  I've got 24 days in so far this season and it's been great but the one thing that has been missing is companionship on the slopes.  I transplanted up here in 6/08 and love it but I left all my skiing buddies behind and none of them have yet to venture up this way.  I typically would classify myself as an advanced intermediate but I've had trouble breaking out of that level.  I have moved up a bit this season (I thank that to having volunteered at Hickory this season and my efforts to learn to ski those trails....WOW, what a different kind of skiing that place is!).  I'm sure skiing with others would push me even harder  (it always has in the past).  The other thing is I'm just not comfortable trying some things without others around just in case....  I'm currently unemployed so I've been able to ski much more than a typical season (I'm making the best of a bad situation), with may days fairly evenly split between Gore, Hickory and West with a couple of days at Whiteface.  I'm going to try and hit Hickory today or tomorrow (this may be their last weekend) and I'm looking at Whiteface next Thursday.  I'll keep you posted on my next excursion to Gore, it could happen at any time!

Thanks again!!!  I look forward to someday seeing everyone on the slopes!
