Gore Weekend - Feb 6,7, 2016

This post was updated on .
A couple of weeks ago I was able to plan a Gore weekend with my brother. Despite the warm winter, we were hoping for winter to revert to a snow pattern. As we all know, this has not happened. But, the good news is that Gore is skiing pretty well. We had a great time.

The guns were blowing snow at the base and the gondola has a green light

First run on Fox Lair

There was a college GS set up on the bottom of Showcase on Saturday and a SL on Sunday. There was a long practice SL set up Saturday afternoon and Sunday on the left side of Twister. It took one of the trails with better conditions and turned it into a crowded mess. Many of the college racers were also using Twister to warm up.

The light was all over the place all day and there were scattered snow squalls. At this point, every flake counts.

Sagamore was not open, sunny at the bottom

Echo, the pitch was pretty much an ice flow, now cloudy

Pine Knot closed and Topridge and Uncas open?

Conditions were decent up top, with some heavier snow squalls

Rare shot of a grassy Pine Knot in February

The snow on Cloud and Headwaters was excellent. The High Peaks double was not open.

First run on Sunday. It was a little sunnier and warmer than Saturday. The light was very interesting

A rare line on the AE2 as the gondola was down for about 10 minutes right before 9am. We waited about 7 minutes.
There were no lines (other than this one) all weekend. Most of the trails, other than Sunway and Twister, were empty.

The scope of the Adirondacks is always impressive, view on Echo

Last run view at the Saddle. My daughter told me she was so sad to leave.

We had a great weekend and kudos to Gore for decent conditions.

Nice report X.

So bummed our daughters missed the chance to get together, they love it so much.

Glad you and yours had fun.  Hope we can swing it before the fat lady sings.

Nice report, glad your family enjoyed the trip.  Funny, I found Twister not to be super-crowded, at least compared to other experiences.  Frankly there were so few people overall at the mountain on Saturday that it makes the limited terrain that much better than would ordinarily be the case.  I don't think they filled up parking lot D.

Thanks.
Twister was great until they put almost a half mile of slalom gates down the skiers left which cut the trail in half. It was NYSEF training and the coaches were coaching from the slope side (not on the tree side) standing at times in the traffic pattern. The kids training were periodically jumping in and out of the course.  In the mix were the college racers who decided not to go down Showcase and use Twister to warm up and to get to the starting gate of their race on Showcase. After a crowded Twister run on Sunday morning, we continued to Burnt Ridge to do a few laps on our private HSQ and trail.

Gore was pretty empty on the rest of the trails on both days.

Nice pictures. Nothing like a good family day of skiing. Yes, gore was empty but I didn't mind. It would have been dangerous with crowds on sketchy snow ( I use the term snow lightly ) . I know the racers make a lot of money for mountain but... When the racers whizzed by me on twister or showcase, often in packs, I was usually startled , just like cars or motorcycles zipping by me on the north way at 90+ mph. I think that I'm going to hear scraping sounds for months after the season ends.
