arrived at the mountain a little after 9, was maybe the 5th car in the lot. went inside got changed waiting till 945 before heading out to superstar. nice size line had already formed but being a single i was able to get up to a good spot, maybe 10 or so chairs back.
headed right to ovation. snow was a bit dense, but once you got some speed it was a lot of fun to just bounce through it. was able to get a nice run down the left tree line and was probably the single best run of the season for me, not so much for the awesomeness of the snow but just felt good. came to the cutoff to get back to superstar, lower ovation was roped off, couple people were standing by the rope and once they went i spun right around to follow. lower ovation was a lot denser and was a hell of a work out. if you had speed you were fine, but you also had NO way to slow down without falling or turning back up the hill, and you had to do one or the other to avoid hitting some massive water bars, but that also added to the fun. about midway down i had 3 turns were i was hitting the ground but nothing to bad, one shot along the edge that took a chuck of base material off. hit the lift and it was amazing the make over superstar received, went from haveing 3 tracks on it to being torn up. made it to the top and met up with a couple gore locals, followed them down a combo of A-way, skylark, and bittersweet if im not mistaken. little bit mellower but still had some good snow, overall dense but not bad at all. went into the lodge to grab a quick drink and check to see when k1 would start spinning, original word was 11:00, but they ended up pushing it back to 11:30. headed back out to superstar to make a few more runs before making my way over to k1. ended up taking another lap on ovation, and then a run down superstar. the snow on the upper part of superstar was a lot of fun. most of the new snow had been skied so soft dense mounds started to form. was a lot of fun to rip some big turns down the headwall. you could blast through most of the snow, but other stuff you would...or could, launch off of. the farther down i went the heavier the snow became. had to make a big sweeping turn from one tree line to the other to stop. last headwall on superstar was a brutal on the legs, there was no easy way to turn, it was basically edge or nothing type deal. after the run down superstar hit the lodge again for another drink and to wait for k1, by this time just about everthing that lift served was pretty well skied in. walked out to the gondi around 11:20 and shortly after the rope was dropped. was pretty far back but wasnt to worried, figured it would be easy enough to find some goods. at the top went right for escape and flume. maybe 8 tracks a head of me but still managed some freshies along the edge. same as before the snow kept getting heavier the farther you went down and by the end of that run my legs were burning. went right back to k1, headed down great northern to royal flush. great northern was mehh, nothing spectacular as you would expect. royal flush had had some traffic on it but looked like a lot of fun. it was basically a mogul field that you could pick and choose which bump you wanted to blast through and what you wanted to shoot off of. couple of the landings brought me in contact with the ground but nothing to serious. lower half of the trail i made about 4 turns before finding a water bar at mach 11. thankfully didnt eject but had a solid 30ft penguin slide!! hit highline after that and superstar once more to end my day. highline was pretty dense, especially with my jello legs but overall not bad, about the same as royalflush. last run on superstar was about the same as the first. big turns up top, turn/flail/turn at the bottom. quote of the day..."its to bad they are to lazy to groom anything, instead they worry about opening stuff." . made it home around 3pm, and then had to go rake a yard....ahhhh spring! might try for tomorrow as well. going to see what its like in the AM |
Sweet, way to get after it. I think I may be there on the 21st. Should help a lot in extending the season. Looks like a smiley face right in front of your skis in that last pic.

I had my first experience with this kind of snow at Plattekill on Oct 30th. I'd never experienced, it took me by surprise and had no clue how to handle it. I mean I guess I handled it by going over the handlebars a bunch of times. Staying back was incredibly hard. Sounds like a great day. Goes to show you that seasonal averages are just the combination of a bunch of aberrations. If I could I surely would...
