Killington just got hit tuesday with 19 inches of snow and i was dying to ski since i havent skied off of a lift since march 23rd. My dads birthday was the 11th and he always tries to ski on his birthday at belleayre for free, obviously that wasnt going to happen so i got to skip school thursday and head to killington. We left at about 5:40 in the morning and made our way to the snow, we pulled in the parking lot at 9:30 with barely any cars there yet. It was a little cloudy but still felt very warm,34 degrees out, i left the lodge at 9:45 or so and waited in line for the gondola. They let people on right at 10:00 we got on the 3rd gondola and talked to some belleayre/ hunter locals and a passholder at killington.
Getting off the gondola thought the clouds looked cool over the mountains. At the beginning of blue heaven looking down at bear mountain. The first two runs were hardpacked snow that you really had to edge into, after that it warmed up a little more and started to soften up. We definitely had some crazy weather thursday, it was cloudy when we got there, then blue sky and when we went over to superstar it got dark and started snowing really hard. after a run on Ovation, superstar and another trail i cant remember my dad went in to get something to drink and i was still really hot in my jacket so i dropped that off and skied in a t shirt for the rest of the day. I hopped on the gondola with two other guys and started talking to them, apparently they were on vacation from charleston, SC for a few days to snowboard and luckily arrived tuesday at the start of the snow even tho they planned their vacation over a month ago. They said they had only gone once this year in Virginia and another time in colorado, they asked if i was afraid of falling in a t shirt but i said id tough it out. We got to the top where it was just blue sky a few mins ago and it was snowing again! Ive been waiting to ski catwalk, my favorite trail, for 3 years and finally got to. After another run up i skied down to escapade and turned off randomally into the woods, still untouched snow and had fun turning in between trees with snow over my knees. I noticed people were hiking up from great northern to the north ridge triple to get some fresh tracks so i decided to walk up. When i got over there i went down power line which was very nice and dropped off the side every so often to turn in waist deep snow. I decided to do it again but on the trail under the lift, basically skied a straight line since i could barely turn. I definitely got some weird looks during the day since i was the only one on the mountain in a t shirt, had an amazing day skiing til 4:30 in super soft natural snow, great way to end the season at killington. Cant wait until next winter! |
Not only was it great to be out on the slopes but having some runs with only natural snow made me remember how nice real snow is in the spring when it warms up. It gets all creamy and not sugary and grainy. Well worth a few gouges!
