Low Expectations: Greek Peak 1/8/12

Powderqueen
Got a late start and almost bailed altogether. I knew that yesterday's soft spring conditions had turned to hard ice at Greek Peak.

My expectations of good skiing were set very low.

I had fun skiing very fast and hard conditions. No need to do much turning on a day like today. Just let'm rip. My Prophets do well at speed and surprisingly well on on the eastern hardpack. Good company helped too.

Greek Peak did a decent job with the grooming. The brown spots of Saturday were a little less brown today. The inch of natural snow helped with that too.

They were making snow, but it would've been nice to see them make even more. They seemed to not be blowing at capacity. I am surprised they aren't taking advantage of the cold temps to crank out as much as they can in the small windows they've been getting.

Love that Greek Peak Country Club

Firm and fast it 'twas

Our crew made first chair so we took full advantage of having Illiad and Fields all to ourselves until the "Red Coat Slalom" showed up. NSP was doing training (seemed like 30 of them) so we new  1A was no longer the place for us...SP goes left we go right

Over to 4 we go for some high speed cruisers....oh what joy!!! We were the only guys on that trail/chair so it was like our own private run for 2 hrs...lap after lap, laugh after laugh.

Few of us have gotten into AlpineReplay....makes for GREAT bragging rights at the bar. One stat that is very shocking is chair time vs. slope time. Yesterday I had 86 minutes of chair lift time and only 20 min of slope time ....very sad, but hey it's skiing.

Temps look good for today/tonight so Tuesday A.M. should cool.

CMR and I both went to college there, and have many fond memories.  The weather can be brutal, but I guess that makes it more conducive to studying. I only went to Greek Peak once, but I remember it being a lot of fun.

I meet a lot of college students from Ithaca at Greek, Cornell, Ithaca College. Ithaca is a beautiful place, I love hiking in the many parks in the area. Robert Treman is my favorite, lost 70lbs hiking up and down their trails. I don't get up there as much since gas prices have gone wacky.

I preferred the conditions Saturday at Greek, but Sunday wasn't bad, similar to Elk on Friday afternoon, more so Hunter Monday. It was fast, I was on Trojan stopped at the entrance to the terrain park, this kid flies by in a snowplow barely in control. I thought to myself," I hope he stays on the trail". I start down the hill, another one flies by me. Downhill was an instructor with a girl probably eight or nine years old right at the choke point in the flats. It was a miracle this kid didn't wipe them out, I felt like following this kid and reprimanding him for his actions, I didn't. I would have liked to stop him and make him wait for the instructor to get down the hill and apologize. Probably would have told me to F off.

Camp, I keep looking for camo pants, haven't seen you yet. Speaking of camo pants, have you seen John lately? I didn't see him all weekend. Maybe his back has finally sidelined him.

We were there Sunday untill 11ish....got first chair at 1A, made 2 runs then headed over to the Trojan where we had the place to ourselves.

Chatted w/ John at the top of chair 4...he's moovin kinda slow but still gets out every day. His doc told him as long as he wears his back brace skiing would be great excersize and help speed his recovery time.

back to GP tomorrow morning!!!

The camping is great in the area! The state parks all have very nice campgrounds..stayed at Robert Treman 2 years back and would highly suggest it!

The snow is in the snowmaking pond

Jason, let me know when you are around. I'll give you the tour. Remember, you have to keep your expectations very low to appreciate Greek Peak.

Truer words were never spoken. Just makes you appreciate the other places you get to ski more. Sucks coming back, ride a chair for eight minutes, buzz down whatever, is that it?....crap. There are some fun spots....WHEN THERE'S FRIGGIN SNOW!

All will be forgiven if it snows in the mountains of the Mad River Valley on, or before, Jan 23rd. The 24th and 25th would be good too, two days at Sugarbush are booked. They've been getting some snow. A powder day there sounds great, ok now I'm getting greedy, what a crappy year so far. Glad I went to Elk, it was pretty sweet first thing in the morning, coulda swore it was Winter, just less of it. I'll take mindless groomers over ice any day. I thought Greek skied great Saturday, very Spring like snow, you could really lean on it, hero.

I can be in Vermont that whole week, so if it wants to snow anytime that week, I'm good with it. Hell, at this point I'd be happy if it snows back home while I'm gone. Just snow somewhere besides Alaska, please.

I can't imagine anyone would have high expectations for a 750 vert hill, no??

That said, I still think we're VERY lucky to have GP right here....sure beats traveling to ski.
