Mad River Glen Turns 66

sudsnbumps
I am only writing this TR so I won't get fined

Duck, I and Suds Jr. (she lived up to that moniker) arrived at MRG at 8am (It's not Gore, you can't buy tickets until 8:30 and the lifts turn at 9).  At 8:35 our hero arrives with $10.50 worth of tickets (3.50 per ticket...1949 pricing).     We were numbers 5,6 and 7 on the lift line prior to opening.  We really thought it was going to be busier than it was. No real waits all day.
The first look at Chute was interesting.  No snow was falling and there was some really hard stuff in the troughs with edgeable tops...so of course we skied it first run.   Early conditions were Variable and although I did not take a picture of the board at the top of the single it stated what Mad River Glen Variable Conditions were.  Summarizing, Rock, Stumps, Trees, Packed Powder, Ice and thinspots...Very Few and after it started snowing they had Powda all Ovah!  It started snowing around 10 and pretty hard at that.    Suds Jr ripping some bumps.  I have been skiing Mad River for a long time, much more in the past...but I was in places on that mountain that I have never seen before.    If you look carefully you can see Jr in there.  Along the lines of firsts, Duck and my daughter rode the double for the first time ever.  Skiing started Mad River Good and ended Mad River Great.  The wind blew snow into pockets that were magnificent.  Even before the snow started to pile up, you could find spots of soft unmolested snow.  Upper Paradise was closed so if you went through the woods off Fall Line to get there you were rewarded with about 5 inches of soft stuff under a somewhat solid base.  I stopped taking pictures when the wind and snow became crazy...about Noon.  There is no place like Mad River Glen in the East.  Little openings in the woods turned into some of the best lines of the day...although Duck had to pluck me out of a bunch of pine trees at one point.  All in all I think we got at least 3.50 worth of skiing. We spent the money we saved in the gift shop and bar.

Great report...love MRG! Was thinking of heading up to our lodge at MRG on Sun, but when I saw the weather report it looked like we were going hammered here in Jersey...so I stayed put.  Our "storm of historic proportions" dropped no more than 4 inches in my area.  Bah!  Glad someone enjoyed it!

Great day and report. I skied until I couldn't ski anymore. 2000ft. of bumps every run wore this old guy out. My legs are still tired. Thanks Suds

Fair to assume $3.50 the price when Mad first opened...

I just read an article about the North Creek Ski Bowl...the first  lift rides sold in NY in 1934... it was ten rides for a quarter and they made $350 that weekend.

Nice that you did some spending inside.
