Magic Mountain, VT: 12/21/14

miker92
Sunday afternoon began what I hope will be a long and gnarly relationship with my new home mountain. I didn't even think I'd be skiing Sunday and slept in late, but I happened to check the Magic trail report just for kicks and saw that they had practically twice as much officially open as they did for opening day on Saturday. I threw everything in the car and got to the mountain just before noon.

The place is even more awesome than I was expecting. I paid $30 for an afternoon ticket and shared the parking lot with less than 20 other cars. On my first run, I ran into a group of regulars who immediately welcomed me into the family.

Despite almost no snowmaking, there was practically 100% coverage on everything. That storm a couple weeks ago really left the mountain in top form. The snow ranged from chalky to creamy, with a thick layer of crust underneath holding everything together. It was a little slick in spots but completely manageable.

MUCH more to come on this, but right now I need to get back to work.

Nice meeting you on Sunday.  If you think It was great on Sunday, wait until the woods are in play. Looking forward to more kind words about our favorite ski area to bring more people in to share the love.

It was great to meet you Mike!  Glad you enjoyed yourself, and like MNIAW said- we're just scratching the surface!!

Just have to say that Mike jumped into the Magic community deep. A little story:

While doing a little jig for the amusement of our friends' baby in the lodge I managed to shear off the rivet that holds one of my boot cuffs. Later, after sitting and talking with Mike, MNIAW and other Magic regulars I show them the pieces of the rivet and the boot. MNIAW asks if that means I'm going to finally retire my (almost) 15 year old boots and I respond that I really can't afford to and I'll have to figure out a repair. So he asks my boot size but the smallest spare he's got is a 28 and I really need to be in a 27.5. At which point Mike chimes in that he's got some extra boots in that size he's never going to use. And, since he's going to Saratoga Springs for the holiday, if I want them we can meet up for the exchange. So, on Christmas Eve we meet at Druthers for a beer and some conversation (turns out we are both SLU alums) and I walk out with the boots I skied in today:

I look forward to making many more turns in them with Mike as he discovers all that Magic has to offer.

Great story. Way to represent Mike.
