Mammoth Lakes August 2nd 2011

Our family planned a 11 day tour of the great state of Californa and on August 1st and 2nd we rolled thru the Sierra's to Mammoth Mountain.

Once on the mountain we had to grab some photos with the Mammoth

The winter of 2010 2011 must have been unreal considering the snow that was still left here in August

The two days we had in Mammoth exploring and mountain biking were very fun, We all made two trips on the bikes down from the mid station Gondi all the way to the town

The best part of the day was when we rode the Gondi to the Summit for lunch and played in the (hard to find anywhere in August) WHITE GOLD

Nice!

Seeing the Mammoth makes me wonder about details on how the mountain was named. Did they find remains preserved in volcanic deposit? Or...

What were temps like up top?

Was anyone skiing? Hiking for turns or can you take skis into the Gondola?

I'da been yearning BIG TIME to ski that snow.

Thanks for posting GunnyJ.

Mammoth got its name from the mining company that mined it.  Temps at the top were a windy 68 degrees when we where there . A few of us (the daring) biked off the summit and the winds were strong but the air wasn't really chilly. At the town it was around 80 degrees. We did not spot any skiers but the Gondola people told us with our day Gondi pass we could ride up ride down and go as we pleased with or with out our bikes.  The snow on the Summit was still Quite firm, early morning temps at our lodge were high 50's.

Those jagged peaks in the background and beautiful blue sky remind me that I really need to get back to the eastern Sierra Nevada for some hiking, climbing, backpacking.  Beautiful country.
