Matt's Alaska Trip

MC2 5678F589
Have some free time today while everybody is still sleeping off their hangovers from yesterday, so I thought I'd post a few pics from my trip to Alaska (currently ongoing).

On the plane ride down to Newark, I got some aerial views of Windham and Hunter:

Flights were fine, and immediately when I landed, we went up to do a little tour in an area about 15 minutes away from downtown.

View of Anchorage after a 20 minute skin:

Nice Lines:

Then we saw a moose walking down the street on the drive home:

Saturday, I skied Alyeska. Didn't get many pictures on the mountain (more video, had the GoPro with chest harness going), but the drive down was nice:

Nice Lines:

Part of the mountain was closed for the Chugach Open (freeride comp with an entry to the WESC on the line), but the rest of the mountain skied well (chopped up pow, nice drops, cool chutes).

Saturday, we got started before sunrise on a "Ski Train" north to Curry, AK.

We were well prepared, breakfast burritos made the night before and warmed in the oven (Eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, black beans, mushrooms, onions, and peppers with mango peach chipotle salsa on the side), Keg of IPA from a local brewery, Two boxes of Franzia, cooler full of bloody mary and chili slow cooking on a crockpot. Both the ride there and the ride back were complete drunken craziness.  Awesome.

Skiing was weird (snow conditions were kind of ehhh), but the experience was awesome. Train from the top:

Drunken train ride back, great night. Now I'm off to go Ice Climbing. Will update this post later with more pics and video.

Sounds like it might be on the best trips one may go on, but best TR ever? There have been quite a few really good ones Harv. You are really putting on the pressure.

Looks like a fun trip. Would like to see more pix of what you are skiing. What's the weather like? Temps? Snow quality? I would've really like to have seen some pix of Alyeska. Looking forward to seeing more.

Very cool, Matt, sick aerials!

Did you get an views of Russia, too?

I can't imagine skinning 20 minutes from my house to ski those lines, what's the job market like out there for bloggers?

No pressure from me! I'm psyched about whatever you can post.

You touring on tele or AT?  Did you bring all your own skis?

Have a great time! Looks fantastic.

He's touring on Tele. Last I heard, he did bring his alpine and tele gear though. He doesn't own an AT setup.

I put up a blog post for the first day of my trip to Thompson Pass here:

http://skiequalsmc2.blogspot.com/2012/03/trip-report-thompson-pass-alaska-32912.html

It was the nicer of my two days weather wise, but the more mellow of the days adventure wise (basically some touring right off the highway).  I shot a bunch of GoPro footage, so look for the video after I get back and have some time to edit.

That's correct.  Contemplating a switch to the darkside, though.  Not only do I feel a lot more confident on some of the hairier stuff with my heel locked down, AT boots are so much more compatible with crampons.  I'm thinking about going with NTN, but that has its own problems.

Just to finish up the Alaska reporting, I finally got the video done.  One rather large GoPro file kept causing my computer to crash, but it seems to have gotten over it.  The video starts with the trip out there (i.e. kinda slow), but it gets better and better, so much so that the best ski footage is around 4:50.  I used the GoPro chest mount at Alyeska and the head thingy at Thompson Pass.  Sorry for all the first person GoPro-ing, but such are the downsides of travelling alone:

Final report here:

Awesome.

Maybe it's just because I know you, or maybe it's because it's a great video - loved it. No GoPro boredom at all.

Looks like a game changer. Great choice on the tunes.

Who were your ski partners? Someone (female?) in the skin scene and someone at the end.

Now over to MC2 to read the post.
