McGregor....and MMA in general

Ok, publicity stunt that got out of hand, or is McGregor just a certifiable nut job?  Both, I guess.  Multiple charges pending.

On MMA in general.....does it baffle anyone else that there are some who view boxing as the “sweet science” and a beautiful sport, while others view MMA as nothing but brutality?  Yes, one is more violent and bloody, but MMA has no less than all the attributes that make boxing what it is (skill, strategy, strength, training and commitment), with arguably greater consequences.  I enjoy watching MMA more than boxing and it has nothing to do with the blood.

I think it's most MMA fans that make it loathsome.  It's got the skill of boxing and the side-show aspect of wrestling, but it's not a good combination.  I mean, I like steak and I like ice cream, but I wouldn't want steak ice cream.  It's a combination that appeals to an energy drinking, sweatpant wearing, ball cap to the side, gold chain, jacked up truck driving white trash 20-something who DO want the blood.  And Dana White is a goof.

While that may not be you, IMHO, the above description is the target audience.

The difference is that boxing rules were developed to protect the fighters.  It wasn't until the 1970s that it became apparent how much brain damage was inevitable under those rules.  That's when boxing became much less popular.
The "arguably greater consequences" is the whole point of MMA.
But your point is correct.  Both are equally brutal.

I guess I don’t necessarily focus on the brutality and consequences as being the main point....although I’ll give you that it is what makes the “show”, for most fans at least.   However, modern martial arts date back some 2,500 years, with their basis in Xia Dynasty fighting systems more than 4,000 years old.  I find the technique fascinating.  

Steak ice creams sounds effin' awesome!

A tomahawk ribeye ice cream would be so much better than a filet, even bone in, ice cream!
