His eyes have been opened

There is Western like skiing at times in the East but you are never going to find it at Hunter or MC.  Smuggs, Sugarloaf, WF are the closest when Ma Nature cooperates.

Has this experience changed your stance on volume over quality?

After actually.......anything I've said on this matter is null and void.
You live and you learn!  "This matter" won't be the last to which your statement applies.  Hey, you catch a fair amount of crap from us curmudgeons, and you bring an exuberant youthful perspective we all had at your age, and your contributions are much appreciated.  However, when we give you a hard time now and again keep this moment in mind, because experience will change many of your perspectives, as it did ours!

There's very litte skiing in the east that isn't icy man-made, and no, you never get enough natural for good skiing.  Maybe enough to ski tight trees on rock skis, but never enough for full coverage.  Even if you do get any natural snow, it usually brings the masses of marginal skiers out who don't ski unless it snows and the crazy powderhounds who will fight you to get a better spot in the liftline.   There's no powder days, its powder hour at best.  By 11, its usually skied off into moguls with blue, boilerplate ice in between.
.....and this is exactly the kind of youthful rant that could get you some push back.  However, let's just say that, while your Steamboat trip opened your eyes to a whole world of skiing you didn't know existed (and you just scratched the surface), additional experience will open your eyes to a world of eastern skiing you can't currently comprehend.  More "ah ha!" moments ahead.

On a bad day can "ec" be what you described?  Sure.  Psst. guess what, there are bad days out west.  However, there are many great days of "ec" skiing to be had that resemble nothing of what you described.  Of course....you will have to supplement your current bag of ski tricks to fully grasp it all......eventually.

I've been to MC on a midweek snow day and it still got crowded as heck.  You drive on snowy roads to get there to have good snow and no weekend crowds, only to "get the shaft" when you see a 15-20 minute life line out of the ropes on a midweek day and the snow all tracked out within 2 runs.

Was that video taken at a resort?  It doesn't say in the description.  If it's not lift served, it doesn't count.

The same stuff that one must hike for miles to reach in the east, one can access in the west from a lift.  In fact, western lift served skiing has better snow quality than ec backcountry.

Glad you didn't say Jay Peak was westernlike.  I loved your "editorial" report from there last year, saying how it was the worst day of skiing you'd ever paid for.  I'd rather ski Stowe, Killington, or any other ski area in VT besides Okemo than Jay Peak.

Ahhhh... The first lesson has been learned.

I look forward to more revelations in the future: an appreciation for bumps and trees, a realization that there's more to skiing than lots of days at mediocre resorts, and maybe even a discovery of the true joys in life like having friends and touching boobs.
Or maybe the awareness that firmly held assumptions, formed without data, could be wrong.
