Met this guy many years ago out west at a well known ski area...anyone recognize him. He's known by many out his way.
...And no, he's not the lion from the Wizard of Oz.

Hair is not what it’s cracked up to be, it grows in places that you don’t want. Never thought I would need an electric nose hair cutter.

As I got back into reading these insane responses I said to myself, "I created a monster" with this thread. Then, much to my amazement,,,,WINNER! YEs, Bob Athley, the Wizard of the Wasatch.

www.wowasatch.com

Hit the link and read all about Bob. My two older sons ADmiKe and Keith and I met him waiting for the bus going up into Little Cottonwood. Interesting guy to say the least. This was years ago and we had no idea who he was until ADmiKe picked up a ski magazine during his work break and saw an article written about him.
Nice job Harvey!

I'm a very bad man.

I knew that guy was some crusty skier from the Wasatch. I thought I recognized his face. When I quoted your post I saw the image file name:

http://forum.nyskiblog.com/file/n4128365/Athley.png

I googled "Athley skier" and found nothing. I dropped the image into Google image search and found nothing.

So I threw that comment out there to see what would happen.

In my defense, it seemed none of the summer crew knew the answer. And we were headed into Disembowler territory so...

Apologies Jon.

RIP Andy Z.

Re: Name this dude

No worries Harvey. I had a feeling there was an image decoder of sorts out there, though it didn't work for you in this case. Last year while in LP, I stumbled upon a GoFundMe for him. Apparently his crib burned down and he was in need of assistance. My wife and I donated to the cause. Years ago when we met him at the bus stop (circa 2003), he was pissing and moaning about how things went to shit in terms of the transportation system and such after the 2002 Olympics. He uttered the words, "you need to take narcotics to deal with this shit". Having no idea who he was at the time, and not too happy about him mouthing off in front of my kids, I told him to stay calm and the bus would eventually show up.
I then asked him which lift he was headed for, to which he replied, "Lift? ..I don't need no stinkin' lift...I'm skinning up to summit of Snowbird". To be honest, I didn't even know what that mean't at the time and thought the dude was completely out of his mind. It all came together when ADkmiKe picked up the Ski magazine on his work break and saw the article about him. Apparently the guy was working for the state (Mike, correct me if wrong), and basically couldn't deal with authority/the system and said f it. He ventured out on his own, did his snowpack assessments, and disseminated his finding via various channels. I didn't pop on his site, but recall he functioned this capacity. When we returned home from UT, I told my wife we had met the real life lion from the Wizard of Oz. My wife looked at me cross-eyed and asked me if I had been drinking that morning. Was afraid to bust out my camera and take a pic of he and my kids, fearing just about anything one could imagine, lol.
