NEWRY, Maine -- In an early sign of the approaching ski season, a Maine ski area has begun firing its ski guns and is ready to blast more if the temperatures stay low. Sunday River says it started its two-day pre-season snowmaking test on Thursday morning, firing off 50 snow guns across a mountaintop trail. If it's cold enough Friday, the resort will blast an additional 50 guns across a couple of more trails. Last year, Sunday River opened on Oct. 24. Its opening day for the 2011-2012 season is still weather dependent. Read more: http://www.cbs6albany.com/articles/ski-1288301-maine-resort.html

It is a system test and a HUGE marketing PR. I doubt much money was lost that won't be recovered in season pass sales this weekend now that this image and the associated video has gone viral. SR has a rep for first to open and one of the last to close. They are dependable and known for snow making. This is just a marketing shot (and a system test) to show skiers and riders that they are ready to blow as soon as temps allow. Dude, get with the stoke!!! SKI SEASON ALMOST HERE, DUDE!

Funny that the hardcore skiers never look at TV, newspaper, radio, facebook, or google advertising in the same way.
"Did you hear that radio ad? What a waste!" Admit it Jason you were trolling!

Looks like A Basin is hoping to be the first area open but Mammoth just got pounded this week with natural. Looks like a good week in the east to get in the last blast of summer sports.

Forgot about Wolf Creek, skied there 4-5 days back in the late 70's. Don't remember much about the hill because it snowed hard every day I was there. Never cleared off so I could see the layout/terrain, just tons of Pow, no complaints. Went back the next yr and sat while it snowed for 2 days nonstop, the pass never opened so I headed up to Crested Butte. I only remember the Poma lift which was almost as much fun riding up as skiing down. Like to get back there sometime before the carcas gives out.

I'm envious. I'll be at a two day fifth grade soccer tournament. Actually, my fifth grader would rather be skiing too...

Saw this on Twitter last night:
LOLZ - Sunday River comes out with a sweet snowmaking video and a nice pic, and Kmart issues a press release saying they saw some guys up on the hill. The Beast is Back? #fail

Let's give K a fair shot. I think they deserve a chance every season to return to their past glory. By giving them a chance, it is just that much easier to viciously rip into them for continuing to fail later in the season. :) More importantly, as my first Trip Report from last year suggests... Blow for Show, Open for Dough. Sunday River is only winning the PR campaign right now. Past results is not indicative of future happenings and K could beat the River even without shooting the mice out. I wish there actually would be a race to open first... it would only benefit skiers if the River actually had any competition...
