Plattekill 2/13/17, Powder Paradise

Cornhead
Platty may not have had a legitimate Powder Daize today based on their criteria of a foot or more the previous night, but rest assured, this was a Powder Daize to remember. A mere six inches had fallen overnight, but it fell atop thirty four inches from the previous five days. Kudos to Laszlo for opening today, judging by the modest crowd, probably at a loss.

We arrived a good forty-five minutes before opening. I booted up downstairs, then headed upstairs to ditch my day pack. The new cubbies and seasonal lockers immediately caught my eye. I also noticed the semicircular couch had been moved right in front of the fireplace. I plopped down there and chatted with the bartender as he stoked the fire.

I took advantage of the virtually zero competition for fresh tracks on the trails by floating down Northface once, then Plunge two, or three times. The trails skied as if half of the 40" fell overnight, not 6".

After reuniting with our group we spent the rest of the day skiing the copiious amounts of snow in the trees. Though there was tons of snow in the trees, there must not have been much, if any, base when the snow began to fall. Felt scrapping occasionally, and did suffer a few shallow gouges on the bases of my pow skis.

I did have one nervous moment, lost a ski exiting the woods onto a switchback, couldn't find the ski, finally looked across the switchback, I could just see the binding barely above the surface about 10 ft down the hill. White powder skis, what were they thinking?

One of my all time days at Platty, on the one hand I wish more people could've made it out to help Laz fund the mountain, but selfishly I didn't mind having fresh tracks all day long.

Guess you are going to need pow straps.

So I take it the SANY pass worked?

Nice report. I was thinking of coming down, but the driving on Sunday was pretty treacherous, so we stayed up North and skied Gore.

Yes, and I'm eating the lunch I packed right now, as little as it is, I bought lunch there to help out, the place was dead. You would think there'd be more people willing to play hookie for the conditions yesterday. I planned the day off as a recovery / decompression day after a five day ski vacation. Glad I did, Sunday became my recovery day, tried to swim laps, arms were too sore, must've been all the poling a had to do at Gore Saturday.

It's great to support Platty in everyway possible...and on top of that, their food upstairs is delicious!

Natural snow is no longer obsolete?

To rely on natural snow to open entire lift sections it is obsolete.  For natural snow to provide a great ski experience and open the woods, it's not at all obsolete.

Sounds like MRG would be your personal hell.
Sent from the driver's seat of my car while in motion.

Gladerunner wanted me to post a pic of his favorite trail at Platty.

Snosnookie be careful.  That guy is twisted.  Anyone that would post the vile things that he did has a problem.  Why a grown man would want to hang out with a 15 year old kid is strange as well.
