It's not fair but it's true- at least it was at Alpine and Killington in the 90s. The lifties and snowmakers always seemed to love the patrollers (sled dogs) but hate the instructors (show dogs).

Agreed with all points, especially in the west.

I thought so as well HPD

Maybe it was because it was the 80's, maybe because it was Smuggs (the ultimate old skewl place), but as far as anyone there was concerned as long as you skied we were all ski bums.

I will say this tho, the best skiers at that mountain imo were the full-time patrollers --- man those guys could rip

What did you do at Smuggs? im curious how many genuine ski bum and former ski bums we have on here. Maybe we need a different thread for that.

Besides party my balls off???

I was a full-time ski instructor by day and bouncer by night ---- on the weekends we skied all over NE wherever the snow was flying ---- I worked as a mason tender as well as cut firewood for a local sugar shack in the summer

those 4 years I wouldn't trade for anything

If all instructors were like you, Camp, that article never would have been written

Funny thing is at Smuggs they truly were. Don't get me wrong, out of the 30ish full-time instructors we had there we did have 6 or so what I call Pretty Boys. They were too cool for school and never got the chicks. Most of us were dirtbags that just wanted to ski ---- come to think of it that must be why all those Nancy's from $towe hated us

Didn't even guess that about you. You don't come across as the stereotypical ski instructor.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

On another blog a guy asked what it took to be a ski patrol.  One answer was:

Medical/first responder training, high level skiing ability, red jacket, beard.

I have seen very few beards on ski patrollers.

I smell Bacon.  "A Trollin' we will go, A Trollin' we will go, hi-ho the derrie-o, A Trollin' we will go."

Gore opens tomorrow.  I've yet to see if my feet still work.

If you ski goodly, I'll let you buy me a beer.  Long Trail, Banquet will do, the Irish Mother's Milk is on me.

Against all the better judgement that Ullr instills in us, a response was required.  Just saying.

PSIA: People Say I'm Awesome

I think about quitting ski instructing every year, and every year, I keep ski instructing.

It's mostly because I like ripping around mountains with kids, teenagers & fun adults (not the kind of curmudgeons that hang out on ski forums). If I quit ski instructing, I might descend into curmudgeonry pretty quickly. I'd have a lot more free time, but I don't know if I'd use it in a positive way.

EDIT: actually, I'd probably go the opposite way: transient ski hippy who isn't really visible at ski resorts because I'm out in the woods somewhere.

Hey - I resemble that remark!
